Chris katongo is confident he can win the African Player of the Year award

Zambia skipper Christopher Katongo is upbeat about the possibility of being crowned 2012 Africa-footballer-of-the-year despite facing some of the big names in African football.

Reigning holder Yaya Toure of Ivory Coast, Alexander Song (Cameroon), Andre Ayew (Ghana), Demba Ba (Senegal), Didier Drogba and Gervais Lombe Yao Koussi (Ivory Coast) have been nominated for the word.

John Obi Mikel (Nigeria) Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon) and Younes Belhanda (Morocco) are the other players vying for the top award.

Katongo, the striker who led Zambia to win their first African Cup of Nations title in February, says he has a good chance of winning.

“Anything is possible. This is football. Who knew that Zambia could win the Africa Cup? We won and here we are….we are African champions,” Katongo said.

In an interview in Lusaka yesterday, Katongo said he has worked hard in the last two years and deserves the prestigious award.

He said he led the Chipolopolo to the quarter-finals at the 2010 Angola Africa Cup of Nations where Zambia lost 4-5 on penalties to Nigeria after a goalless draw in regulation time.

The quarter-final berth came after 14 years of group stage ejection.

“I have worked hard in the last two years and this year Zambia won the Africa Cup. I have put in my best for both the national team and for my club [ Henan Jienye of China],” Katongo said.

He is humbled to be nominated for the 2012 African-player-of-the-year.

Katongo admitted that competition for the prestigious award is tough but is confident of rising to the occasion.

“There are some good players in competitive leagues in the world but I am sure the judges will look at what the players have achieved with their national teams,” he said.

The Confederation of African Football will announce the top three players this monthend and the winner will be announced on December 20 in Accra, Ghana.

Katongo also said it is important for a Zambian to win the African title to follow in the footsteps of soccer icon Kalusha Bwalya who was the continent’s best in 1988.

“That is why Kalusha is called the Great Kalu.  Since 1988 no player from southern Africa has won the African-player-of-the-year award and those of us who are still active should strive to win the award. It is not only me and other Zambian players but other players from other countries as well.  Players from North and West Africa have dominated of late,” he said.

Meanwhile, Katongo said he will decide on his future with Henan Jienye after the Africa Cup of Nations.

Both Katongo and his Chipolopolo teammate Isaac Chansa feature for Jienye, who were demoted to the second division.

“I still have one year left on my contract and for now, my focus is on the Africa Cup. I will decide after the Africa Cup,” he said.

Katongo scored 11 goals for Jienye, two in cup games and 11 in the league.

Why is this news! Stop trying to attract insults here. I think Zambians are so worried about Nigeria and Burkina who are real threats to them since they could not even beat Uganda and parked the bus to take the game to Penalty kicks(a lottery) against Uganda. A true small team mentality!!

    • Kay says:

I don’t blame GSN nor Katongo but CAF. He couldn’t save his relegated Chinese Club but here in Africa he is a hero? Has he ever played at a world Cup? How many times has Zambia won the AFCON? all of sudden Zambia is Africa’s greatest football nation?
Even TP Mazembe players are ahead of Clottey? Thank you CAF for all your inefficiencies, disgrace, disgrace and disgrace upon Africa.

      • Randy says:

It’s Kalusha bribing Tunisian referees and CAF officials just to maintain his FA position.
If indeed Zambians are that good, elite clubs would be chasing them for their signatures. Mediocre players, even unknown in Africa until the AFCON.
Let Zambia win all the awards, but they will be badly disgraced in South Africa come AFCON 2013.

        • Stop crying says:

Ghana please, stop whinning…the AFCON is around the corner, prove it that u really who you claim to be!!Its only 2 months time.okay!

          • Mojahadine says:

Ghana has nothing to prove to anyone. Our record in the world of soccer is there for you to see. Now lets compare that to Zambia and see. Does anyone even consider Zambia a soccer nation?

In the world of soccer there is always an anormaly, some low level team matching well against a first class team and that is the dynamism between Ghana and Zambia.

      • Ghanaman says:

A player in the Chinese 2nd division as African player of the year! Oh!!! What a disgrace!!!!

    • Papa says:

Sour grapes! Ghana is envious that it has never won what Zambia has won. Zambia has won a 16 Nations African Cup of Nations. Ghana last won the Mickey Mouse 8 Nations African Cup when football on the continent was amateur.

      • Ghanaman says:

It was 8 because, there were only 8 teams capable of being there! If you were good enough you should have presented a team then! Instead you had boots on your dirty necks!!

        • Chiku says:

Now this is reality 4 u Gayna…u can’t win it with 16 teams participating..u quarter final berths of 31 years are long gone!!!Anyway prove it this time around, but seriously i doubt it…the competition is a lot tougher these days.16 teams u got that????

  2. Papa says:

Ghanaians are so funny! If Ghana was such a great team, they would not have lost to Zambia twice in succession. You keep calling Zambia a small team. The so called small team beat you and what does that make you? A little team! GHANA is a LITTLE TEAM!

  3. Dr Who says:

How can a Shaolin master be listed among CAF player of the year award?

  4. Prince says:

Katongo paaa,u play for a second division team in China and u want this prestigious award to be giving to you…Massa please go sleep somewhere ok..

  5. kwame says:

Katongo would not be in the last three because he doesn’t deserve to be among the best.

  6. katongo chipoya christopher says:

thats the reason why you ghanan you never won afcon

  7. tank God we are nt zambians says:

katongo is a local joker! camon wat gud comes frm china evrytin is fake.i dnt knw y yor name is even mentioned among dis great players.if u dnt hav anytin beta to say send som shadouts to the hookers

@tank God we are nt zambians you are atypical illiterate, incorrigible bigot, crass crown and an insipid twerp travel and see

  10. Zambia says:

It says african footballer of the year.from leading zambia lifting the cup of nations in west africa and then continue pushing zambia foward nd scoring important goals for zambia.ths guy is no doubt the african player of the year.let drogba, toure, eto, jordan flops fight 4european player.coz in africa non of these came close to sunami super katongo.hala zambia

  11. Mwansa says:

    WELCOME TO ZAMBIASOCCERNET!!!

Ghana and Ivory Coast claim to have excellent players in europe and none of them could save you the embarasment of not winning the AFRICA CUP for 32years?????

Katongo plays in China and managed to give his country a nicely deserved AFCON trophy after shooting down elephants, lions and so called stars.

REALLY WHO DO YOU THINK DERSERVES THE AWARD?

Where were your european strikers when he made the list of top-scorers and they didnt?

Maybe Drogba and the others were in at different AFCON???????

FOR ONCE GHANIANS, STOP TRYING SO HARD TO BE STUPID BECAUSE I STILL DONT BELIEVE ALL OF YOU ARE STUPID (MAYBE GHANAMAN) AND ACCEPT THE FACTS.

Zambia is now ranked 5th and Ghana 4th thanks to those 8-team fluke AFCONS you won 32years ago where a team played probably two matches and won the cup.

By January Zambia will be way past your team in rankings because atleast before the AFCON, Ghanian players believed they were better than Zambia but after being shown there were nothing but a bag of charcoal, they are now even mentally scared of Zambia.

Did you see how they were chickened in Ndola when Zambia gave them a routine 1-0 beating, they were so scared that they only had one shot on goal in 90min.

Any game between u and Zambia calls for celebrations before the the whistle like we did in Ndola.

Nigeria is really a better opponent than u.

Zambia has achieved something Ghana has never achieved AND thats winning a 16-team AFCON, period!

Stop bragging about your under-whatever teams winning the world cup because than 60% of them failed the FIFA age cheating tests.

Good luck Katongo! You are the best!

@ Mwansa…Zambia has achieved wat Ghana has never achieved? Are u serious Mwansa?…wat did Zambia won?…African cup of nations right?…and how many times has Ghana won that?…if u think it was easy back then then how come Zambia couldn’t even win none?…stfu and get ur facts right…Ghana is a 4 time African champion and has made it to 2 world cups…reaches 1/16 first appearance and 1/8 the last time so wat r u talking about? The truth is U can’t compare Zambia to Ghana on achievements both in African and the world…Ghana is on cloud 9 boy

    • Randy says:

When were you born? Go and check up your facts before exposing your ignorance and immaturity.

Let me ask you one question, how many years did it take Zambia to win her first AFCON? Over Fifty years?

And you call yourself a football country?
How many Zambian have won the best player in Africa? Anybody apart from Kalusha?

How many world cups has Zambia played?
Did you or did you not bribed the Tunisian referee?

The whole of Africa will see the exposure of Zambia football. You have forgotten so soon how Sudan and Uganda exposed your inexperience? Do know your coach was nobody in Ghana? Thank Ghana for bringing him to Africa.
Your fifth position in Africa is an achievements to Zambians but to Ghana, fourth position is a disgrace because we have been number ONE on several occasions.
Ghana falls down ten times we get back up ten times.

      • Waiting in vain says:

Randyman ,i wil ask u one question….has Ghana ever won the AFCON with 16 teams participating???my answer is no ,u even failed to win it when u hosted the tourney …S.A hosted in ’96 and easily won it.In fact u shuld be ashamed of yourselves becos Cameroun,Nigeria and CIV hv won it with 16 teams participating…but u naaaaaaada upto now,my hair is now turning grey n iam still waiting to witness u prevail amongst 16 teams.

  12. Liberia says:

Ghana pray u don’t meet the likes of Mali,Nigeria and Zambia in the knock-out matches, otherwise u ass is toast!!!

    • Robeen says:

Sudan is planning seriously to disgrace you at Ndola, they have beaten you and can do it again. 2013 Afcon will be the end of the name ZAMBIA. I am not really sure you can qualify from your group. Zambia has riding on luck but everything has an end. Do you remember Sudan and Uganda? That is just the beginning, the real massacre is on the way.

  13. Mayuka, Southampton England says:

so what if katongo was demoted he is going to join another club in january its a simple routine. by the way you ghanians beware of fwayo tembo he is coming for you in january he is in red hot form in romania and his club have valued him at 20 million euros and the best midfielder in romania.

  14. Newyork4ever24 says:

@ Mwansa…where did u learn English?…wat u were supposed to say was the other way around…Zambia has never and will never achieved wat Ghana has achieved…meaning winning the African Nations cup 4 times with 8 teams(past) participation and conclude by saying Ghana has not won the cup “yet” with 16 team participation because its still 16 teams(current)…go back to school boy

  15. Newyork4ever24 says:

@ Mwansa…and if u think it was easy back then then how come Zambia won none?…c’mon boy it’s like saying Uruguay won the World Cup when there’s was only 4 or less teams so they didn’t achieve anything…c’mon grow some sense

  16. zambia is a shit hole! says:

Foolish katongo talkn shit u relegate ur club and u want da award.drogba single handedly won da champions league..kalusha is pullin som strings no wonder katongo thinks he can get da award..

  17. One Andy says:

Why are you Ghanains so bitter on anything?Honestly i dont understand most of you Ghanain bloggers on this site. Why is it that you always want to be on the high for everything even if you dont deserve it?Apart from Kimco and a few others i seriously pity most of you guyz and your contributions.Sometimes its just better to let others who have reasonable posts do the right thing than just talking a lot of nonsence and insults

  18. Zambia loves Ghana says:

Dear Ghanaian brothers, I urge you to be object in your comments. In as much as we know that Ghana is a great footballing nation, please admit that Zambia are African Champions. When Ghana was representing Africa at WC 2010, the whole of Africa was behnd Ghana and we in Zambia, in particular we rallied behind Ghana as our brothers. But why is it difficult for Ghanaians to swallow their pride and give Zambia what its is due to Zambia, i.e. African Champions and one of the great footballing nations in Africa? It is this attitude by Ghanaians that will make you fail to win it even next year in 2013. Mind you South Africa is like home ground to Zambia. If we can win it in West Africa, what can stop Zambia winning it again in 2013. Thats why I have great respect for the Nigerians and their national team. They are very objective. Good luck Ghana, see in RSA next year.

  19. Roving eyes says:

Superiority!just work hard, you ghanians like talking too much.Football has changed and if you think you win points on dis blog by yapping too much,I’m sorry no accolades for your team.Katongo is a great player. His personal attributes as a player puts him above everything else.wat you saw during Africa cup was just sample for who does not know him.The republican president had to honor him and iam sure CAF will do so.when did your team last won an accolade? In colonial days,I guess!Just deal with your failures.Chipolopolooo iyeeeee!

    • prince says:

look at these zambians , you guys are also so ignorant it’s even funny , you got some division two shailon master who scored a couple of goals , in the afcon and did exceptionally well in division two scoring 11 goals what the name of his team again (Chinese Fried rice stars lol) against Didier Drogba , who scored against world class teams in the the worlds most prestigious tournament yet according to Zambians and zambians only we should give it to katango , people are funny lol . See one thing people don’t understand is that afcon is very difficult for players actually playing in europe, bear in mind most of these players are not realeased early and some of their european teams refuse , due to the major matches which will be missed. African players therefore don’t perform as well not unless your from zambia, you see there all their players warm the bench even in african clubs lol , therefore they are months advanced in preparation , with katango they failed to win in sudan i mean sudan those players didn’t even have their breakfast , then Uganda oh thats right maybe their great Katongo wasn’t playing lol. No one in Ghana envies zambia we congratulate you, you won a good tournament but it stops there. Our talent is unmatched from players in Juventus(kwadwo asamoah) to projected stars in Porto(Atsu is the name) ,if afcon is the only bragging rights you guys hold them i sorry to dissapoint where is Egypt? they won the tournment 3 times in a row.
