World Cup opposition watch: USA friendly against Ukraine to go ahead

By Ameenu Shardow, follow on Twitter @alooameenu Ukraine's friendly against the United States will go ahead on Wednesday in Cyprus after an initial doubt over the status of the game for Ghana's 2014 World Cup opponents.

Reports on Monday night said the match - already moved away from Ukraine - had been cancelled due to the ongoing crisis in the country.

Ukrainian FA chief Anatoliy Konkov had however revealed that the match will not take place as it will be inconsistent with the current strive back home.

“We cannot hold the national match so what kind of football can we talk of at all?” Konkov said.

However, US Soccer issued a statement saying it had contacted its Ukrainian counterpart the FFU seeking confirmation of its plans amid the reports, but later confirmed the match would go ahead.

"The Football Federation of Ukraine confirmed that their team will travel to Cyprus and the match will proceed as scheduled," US Soccer said via Twitter.

The match is part of the United States' preparations for the World Cup in Brazil.

The German trainer Jurgen Klinsmann is keen to use every opportunity available to prepare his side adequately before facing Ghana in the opening Group G match at the World Cup in Brazil.

USA’s other Group G opponents; Ghana, Portugal and Germany will be involved in friendlies against Montenegro, Cameroon and Chile respectively.
