We lost to a better side - Asamoah Gyan

Gyan accepts Liberia defeat in good faith

By Ameenu Shardow

Striker Asamoah Gyan says Liberia deserved their 2-0 win over Ghana in Tuesday’s friendly game.

The Black Stars were unable to recover from a 2-0 scoreline suffered within the first ten minutes of the game played in Monrovia.

Many reasons have since been preferred for the shocking defeat including the late start of the match.

The game also did not travel the full 45 minutes in the first half but the stand-in captain says the Black Stars were second best and thus deserved the defeat.

“We conceded the goals within three minutes and when that happens it becomes very difficult to come back,” he told Peace FM.

“I think it was due to loss in concentration but we mounted a good fight but unfortunately we were unable to come back.

“We need to accept the defeat in good faith because the better side won.”

The Black Stars had three days earlier beaten Malawi 2-0 in the first leg of the 2013 Nations Cup qualifier in a far from convincing performance.

Ghana will next play The Flames in the return encounter of the AFCON qualifier next month in Blantyre.

Well said. That is football, this is not a big deal,it is just a friendly match. It is good that your saved your legs from injuries and expect a good show in our next important game. Thanks Gyan

  2. Boro says:

Second best to Liberia indeed, then forget the final world cup in Brazil too. The Malawians coach knew that our team is no team and that is why he is confident that he can beat Ghana and eliminate us for the Africa cup qualifier back home. Akwasi you have not done anything special with this team since you took over. As a matter of fact, you have made BS team worse than you came to meet it. We will not take it easy if you are not able to qualify BS to South Africa, win it, qualify us to Brazil and move past the quarter-final stage. However, your first test is the Africa cup qualifier and winning it. If you know you cannot please, leave BS honorably because Ghanaians will not accept words like ‘ it is my fault, blame me not the players’ like your predecessor did, after you have failed to achieve the above. Do not let the money entice you and continue to push when you know that you cannot complete this task.

  4. cofie says:

This friendly much means nothing besides the men have to save their energies and legs for their respective leagues. Liberia can also not loose on their independence day so i think everything was planned. Its all about the friendship. Liberia know they cannot stand Ghana on serious note.

  7. Odadie says:

What were people thinking? That Ghana was going there to halt the joyous mood of the Liberians? Guys, be realistic. I personally tipped Liberia to win at all cost. This is a planned game to climax their celebration. Why do u people think their goals were all scored in the early minutes of the game? This is simple logic. In as much as BS do not play so well of late, there was no way Liberia would have scored two goals in the first few minutes. This is simple logic. Even the U17 women’s team of Liberia would have won against the BS under this circumstance.

    Not captain material!!

  9. nii adama says:

@cofie I agree wit all was plannd.u cnt disgrace liberia on their independnc dae.dat explains da 40min first half.BS is still a bettr team we need to b careful tho.

  10. boakaye says:

PUT GFA in prison for treason

  11. ghana king says:

Gyan not serious playa mental problem go see di dr.
or make a song or dance lol

  12. anokwale says:

Ghanaians panic way too much. Black Stars are basically an average team that can be spectacular at times and terrible at times. This was one of the terrible days. At least it does not count and can be learned from.

  13. One Andy says:

Anokwale is right my man.You can only test your team in friendlies like this one. What is important is what the coach learnt coz it will help him draw a strategy for vital games and not just rankings which are just on paper.Ghanaians laughed at us when Malawi beat our local side but to us it didnt matter coz Renard assesed the players and that is what matters most
