Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has backed the current squad to pick up some serious silverware.

Michael Essien is currently playing for Italian side AC Milan, but he still clearly has a great fondness for former side Chelsea and believes the Blues are on the right track.

The Ghanaian midfielder was owned by Chelsea between 2005 and 2014 and won two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League while at Stamford Bridge.

The 32-year-old has praised Jose Mourinho's current side, who are leading the way in the Premier League, and expects them to succeed this season.

"They are a delight to watch and I am sure Chelsea fans are loving their play," he is quoted as saying in the Daily Star.

"The way they are playing now reminds me of when I first came to Chelsea.

"We were very hard to beat and we won most of our games, and they are doing it this year.

"They have a lot of young players who can step up. I think they are going to become like Chelsea of years ago. And they will win trophies for their club."

Chelsea have a three-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League and have progressed to the Champions League last 16 and League Cup semi-finals, prompting some talk of a quadruple.
