Waris wants to explode in Liberia friendly

Abdul Majeed Waris wants to impress in the friendly against Liberia

Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris is keen to impress coach Kwesi Appiah in Tuesday’s friendly against Liberia.

The 20-year-old Swedish Allsvenskan top scorer has been included in an 18-man squad to play the Lone Stars at the SKD Sports Complex in Paynesville in Monrovia.

Waris failed to make the bench for last Saturday’s Nations Cup qualifier against Malawi at home.

He must compete for a place in Ghana’s attack with strikers Asamoah Gyan, Jordan Ayew and Richmond Boakye-Yiadom.

Waris is prepared to make the most of the game time that will be handed him.

“This will be a fine opportunity for me to shine and I must take chances especially if I get to start,” he told MTNFootball.com

He has scored 19 goals in all competitions this season for BK Hacken.

Akwasi Appiah should give him the whole 90 minutes to prove himself, then we can draw our conclusions on him. Let Gyan and Boakye share the 90 minutes if we are playing two strikers.
You can put a player like that on the bench.

you need to bench Gyan and give others a chance

Waris needs to stop talking and wait for his opportunity and then shine, impress or explode on the world scene. Talk is cheap so stop talking. Be quiet and humble like Christian Atsu then when given the chance you give it everything you got. Do not waste the energy talking. You know your quality and capability, just be patient till the Coach calls on you.

We are all waiting patiently because you are one of the best strikers out there. A lot of Ghana soccer fans are anxious to watch you play. Just play the way you know how, do not put pressure on yourself. When called upon just enjoy the game, play like you do in Sweden, play with a smile on your face like Asamoah Gyan but when you get a chance do not miss, be deadly like a cobra and strike to score not to impress. Remember you are very good and that is why you are on the squad. You must be the best to strike for Ghana and I have watched every World Cup game since the 70s and I can tell you Waris you got what it takes.

Coach Appiah I am a believer because you included Waris on your team and you made the prodigal son your captain. Oh and you were gutsy enough to start Christian Atsu. Please give Waris the same opportunity you have been giving Jordan. Ghana soccer fans who know and love this game as you do want to see the glory days again. You cannot bring back the glory days by being timid. You must have courage and be bold. Bench players when they need to be benched and reward players that show promise. You have given Jordan a lot of opportunities and so far as I am concerned enough is enough. He did not impress in Gabon/Equitorial Guinea and he did not impress against Malawi. It is time to give someone else a chance. I hope you are not afraid of your former team-mate Abedi Pele. He knows soccer and he will understand.

Give Waris a full 90 minutes, Ghanaians deserve to see the best players we have out there. I am confident he will not disappoint. If you wait till the end of the game to put him in we will never know what he could have done. I am absolutely positive that if Waris had got some of the service that Atsu dished out on Saturday he would have scored a hat trick easy. The guy is just that efficient and hungry. He loves the game and he does not waste that many chances and his scoring average is off the charts. He deserves 90 minutes, he is tough and will not be complaining or giving up possession 50 percent of the time like Jordan did against Malawi. He scored against some of the best defenders Ghana has and deserves a fair opportunity.

My last suggestion is pick the best players and then keep then and start building your team. You cannot be calling up brand new players for every tournament otherwise all you will have is a collection of talented quality players but no team. Keep your starting eleven always and get them playing consistently together so they can think as a unit, move as a team and play more one/two touch moving off the ball like Ghanaian and Brazilian soccer is supposed to be. I am sure there is a good reason why some of the starters like Adam, Vorsah, Opare are not traveling to Monrovia with the rest of the team. Please use every opportunity to keep your starting eleven. You need a cohesive team. This is why Malawi out-played Ghana, those younsters have been together for some time and you can tell by watching how they pass and move off the ball.

Now that you have Christian Atsu you should let Muntari heal and focus on his Club team like Michael Essien is doing. Give some of the more experienced high earning players a break as soon as you find young players that are talented enough to step into their big shoes. I think Agyeman Badu can fill Michael Essien’s spot. John Boye, Vorsah, Jonathan Mensah, Akaminko etc can step up and give John Mensah a chance to focus on his club commitment. Let’s face it a lot of the Clubs do not want to invest a lot of money to sign key players that are going to be gone at a crucial point during their season because of the African Cup. A lot of the experienced players have served their country well and we must help them when they close in on 30 to focus on their club commitments so they can retire comfortably. In cases where they want to continue playing there is no need to force them out, just let them compete fairly for their positions.
