Valenciennes have played down the severity of the shoulder injury picked up by key player Abdul Majeed Waris last Sunday.

The Ghana striker suffered the injury late on in the game after colliding with Olympique Lyon’s goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.

Waris scored and missed a penalty as his struggling Ligue 1 side lost 2-1 at the Stade du Hainaut.

"He suffered a serious contusion on the shoulder after clashing with the Lyon goalkeeper late in the game,” Valenciennes coach Ariel Jacobs told the club’s official website.

“There is no fracture or ligament problem, so nothing serious, but it was bad. He should get better during the week. Moreover, even with injury, he wanted to run this morning (Tuesday), but we spared him."

Waris is the club’s top scorer with nine goals from 12 Ligue 1 appearances since joining in January on loan from Russian side Spartak Moscow.
