Uganda coach Bobby Williamson says the Black Stars cannot win the AFCON title

Uganda coach Bobby Williamson has rubbished the chances of Ghana winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title in South Africa insisting they have nothing to offer.

The Scottish coach does not believe Nigeria and Ivory Coast have anything special to offer in Africa’s flagship football tournament which starts on Saturday.

The controversial coach is rather tipping hosts South Africa and champions Zambia who have not been impressive in the build-up to the tournament.

Williamson, who recently slammed by Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi for criticising European coaches in Africa, got close to qualifying the Cranes of Uganda for the AFCON but was denied a place by African champions, Zambia.

“The Bafana Bafana team have prepared well enough and their recent results in international build-ups speak for themselves ,” Williamson was quoted as saying on MTNfootball.com.

“With very good support from home and playing as a team I think South Africa will win the AFCON Cup.

“There is nothing special with the so called big teams like Nigeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast.”

South Africa who last won the Afcon trophy in 1996 when they hosted are in Pool A alongside Angola, Cape Verde and Morocco.

Williamson, formerly coach of Scottish Clubs Kilmarnock and Hibs, and also English side Chester City said although he thinks South Africa have an upper hand, he added that the AFCON is full of surprises and anything can happen.

Asked if he rated the defending champions Zambia highly, the Ugandan coach said the Chipolopolo are an experienced team and cannot be underrated.

“They have not been playing well in the build-ups, but that could work to their advantage because they will go into the tournament all out to prove a point,” Williamson said.

“The one team that might surprise a few people is Zambia who have a lot of top players. It’s going to be a great tournament.”

His attitude is same as Malawi coach who was sacked few days ago. Let him talk too much. After all he will bow his head in shame. Last year Zambia won AFCON by luck

    • Tout Puissant says:

Your are very shallow minded,So All the teams zambia beat it was by luck.Anyway in life you need hard work and luck,Fact.

    • bullmaan says:

Ghana must be very unlucky, over 30 years of bad luck.Real soccer fans give credit where it is due Zambia beat ghana twice in 4 months in the second game the world cup qualifier they where outplayed to a point where they never had a shot on target for 90 minutes.Tiger give credit where it is due.

  4. Papa Nkrumah says:

@Zg. very funny comment about the coach being a goat “header.” But it makes sense that he would say what he is saying especially in tipping Zambia to win. That is the only way he can convince himself that he didn’t fail Uganda when Zambia qualified for the AFCON ahead of them.It would be dangerous for him to say that Zambia is not good yet he could not defeat them. He just wants to save his job you know.

    • kwame-blz says:

U nailed it, and I believe he lost his mind and confused for not qualifying and on his way to losing his job. Ofcourse zambia is the team to beat becuz they return and are the title holder, but to be a coach and say zambia zambia got players top players?!? name them.

Dude is just bitter for not getting to coach Ghana when he applied for the job.

  9. kwa george says:

IF UGANDA WAS FACING TEAMS LIKE NIGERIA/ GHANA , THEY COULD HAVE QUALIFIED FOR THIS AFCON.

  10. Judah says:

Well opinions are just like noses. He just expressed his. May be he wants the zambia job after Harve. These expatriats, le roy, did same with Ghana, and when we returned from Germany he took over tha Black Stars. We know them too well.

  11. Agenda says:

In fact I sometimes feel so embarrassed by some of these fellow Ghanaian ‘sharp teeths’ who don’t want to hear differing opinions by our fellow African brothers. You guyz cannot convince me u were taught this behavior in schools n homes! Your politicians have taught you that! Understand that this is no platform for some of us who have nothing good to offer. We read ppls opinions to also understand their way of thinking n that’s the best way to move forward.Just imagine someone standing b4 u to say ‘idiot’ only after speaking ur mind!

  12. Blakroze GH says:

@Agenda unfortunately I have to side with you on this one, gone are the days when we could debate healthly and with facts without insulting each other, but we are not to blame entirely cos from what I saw previously our peace was disturbed when foreigners started mocking us so you should understand us when we come out all guns blazing.

  13. Joshua Jere says:

@Blackrose I think it is important to understand that this is the best african football site i have ever come across. Especially regarding stories about the afcon and african teams in general and it is for this reason that we the foreigners come to this site. And by the way, you the ghanians make it interesting with your comments but i think sometimes some of the comments just go too far with too many insults and lack of respect for your fellow africans. If only you guys can atleast debate with us on these issues and even differ constructively we will do alot better. But i must commend you guys for making such a wondeful platform to discuss soccer. by the way I am Zambian.

  14. Blakroze GH says:

@Joshua Jere…..wooow you? A Zambian? It is true that to every rule there is an exception, cos seriously you are the 2nd Zambian I’ve come across that has actually made an attempt at finding common ground with a Ghanaian and I admire you greatly for that…..believe you me, you are the perfect example of what I dream of in future Africa, where we meet each other half way in a debate and learn from each other whilst putting our points across cos I belief with such privileges in this 21st century as the availability of the internet, we can be easily united if we all had your kind of thoughts, where there’s justice there is peace so I belief if we should all talk to each other like our own we won’t find space for insults to boost our opinions, after all we learn from debates so why not take this opportunity to learn of our weaknesses in our team from the foreigners….but the foreigners should also present their points insult free cos insults to the average Ghanaian is met with equal/ higher levels of insults.

  15. Former ghanian says:

Don’t insult just talk. That’s his opinion. Be mature, we will embarass you and cause confusion in your camp.

  16. Blakroze GH says:

@ former ghanian, in our local dialect we have a saying that,” where God plants his plantains is the same place the devil plants his weeds” so just like how I praised Josh Jele, I stand to rebuke your demonic efforts because it’s only an evil minded person that can utter such wicked things as this”and cause confusion in your camp.” It’s only the devil that causes confussion in a peaceful place so if you are not of the devil you will retract your statement and change your name cos it’s the exact name of a confusionist.

  17. Former ghanian says:

@blackrose its not that confusion u are thing of. Its after whalloping you then u starting finger pointing. Don’t think of evil even on simple matters. We are all born again lets talk football. Don’t be emotional. Sorry if i offended u.

  18. Blakroze GH says:

@former ghanian I must confess that I felt bad after I sent the comment cos I felt it was too harsh, seriously it was after I sent it that I realised You could have meant finger pointing rather than confusion…. Now you have cleared it, it is my duty to apologize for attacking a Christian brother, I tend to be passionate about things I love but it doesn’t stop me from falling to my knees when I go wrong….so my brother, forgive me, I’m truly sorry.

  19. Former ghanian says:

    @blackrose.Its okay brother, good day.

  20. PIG says:

Within hours, the games start. I am a Zambian and I hope to enjoy each and every game. The reason I will enjoy is that I realise that football is entertainment. Zambia is meeting 15 other very good team and each of these teams is capable of wining the trophy. I Zambia loses at what ever level, I will continue watching because we have been through this before, we know what it is to lose in the first round, in the quarter finals, in the semis , we have lost in the finals before and indeed we know that life will remain the same even if we won(except that the footballers themselves will have added a few thousand dollars to their bank accounts).

To my colleagues in Ghana, my brother Joshua Jere has already stated why we ‘flock’ to this site. Its a good site and the variety of thought is unparalleled. We have a similar site http://www.zambianfootball.co.zm which I m sure your different analysis would give variety to the monotony of thinking we are the best. Its understandable for some of you to get upset when others think your team is nothing, but reality is, that is what they think and the next three weeks will show who is right.

Let us just moderate and minimise on insults. Zambians, Nigerians, and anybody with access to a computer and internet will visit your forum and there is nothing you can do about it. Whilst its a site by Ghanaians, all who find it interesting will visit it, and you guys should infact be proud and not become xenophobic.

  21. Congoman says:

Yes PIG. Your words says it all. And because of the ignorance of some of Ghana people, the
Black Stars will pay for it this Sunday in Port Elizabeth.
Watch Mbokani, Mputu, and Lualua how they are going to
Dismantle their team piece by piece, inch by inch!!.

  22. tymer says:

@Congoman Do u even have a coach? This Leroy knows all too well the embarrassment he’ll face after the match on Sunday so he’s run away from his responsibilities. And please, most of these players were part of the tp mazembe team which were taken apart by an unfancied team from Ghana in the caf champions league.

  23. Blakroze GH says:

@Congoman, I think our lesson will be taught well after you set your coach right, cos by news reaching me he turned in his resignation letter 3days before meeting the team you soo badly wan’t to discipline….hahahaha, please congoman do visit us from time to time even after your defeat ok? I can’t wait till sunday when Lua lua takes on a young and hungry J.boye or I.vorsah

  24. Agenda says:

Yes,yes, yes. After my comments I can now see reason. How beautiful n heartwarming to read from ur fellow african brother! Hey guyz u are more than welcome here on this site.Kiss u all mmmmmwwa!!! But that stuge called ‘Zambia our ….’ u better think cos u are the odd one out after comment 13

  25. Congoman says:

@ Blackroze GH; don’t be a fool brother!. Leroy AIN’T going no where!!.
That was pure mind game, to make the cowards coaches like the Kumasi coach dance n’ jump
Up and down. And when Sunday comes?, Leroy will be there with his troops ready to hammer
The black stars. Mark my words. Leroy is well with the Leopards in Port Elizabeth.

  26. Blakroze GH says:

Ok congoman,God willing we’ll live to see that day right? I just hope that you wouldn’t pull the vanishing act after sunday because you claim you did that for us to dance and shout but you failed to realize that in the course of your deciet(according to you) you gifted us with faith and belief to beat you…cos now it’s deep in our mentality that you guys are coachless/have a discontent coach so we’ll come on sunday more prepared to mince you up.

  27. Congoman says:

@ Blackroze GH; the mind game was done purely to give u this fause bilieve.
And by the look of it I think the game plan has worked. Just like the tshipolopolo
Boys(underdogs) done to your so called power house in AFRICAN Football.
Anyway we will see who is the best on Sunday?. You will discover the true face of LEOPARDS.

  28. Chu says:

I feel sorry for the unluckiest thing on the continent. Lost on the last day to Angola for 2012 AFC and now only a kick. And so shall it be for the next 30yrs if he doesn’t come to Ghana for physiotherapy on playing qualifiers

  29. Congoman says:

Yes yes Bullmaan, you’re absolutely right. Ghana won most of their
Cups when there were only 2 or 3 teams playing. Egypt, Sudan And Ethiopia.lool.
After many African got independence and start playing football the black stars has been
Finding it Hard if not impossible to win the CAN!!!.
They only got lucky in 1982 winning on penalty. That’s it. What African Giant is this?.

  30. Blakroze GH says:

@congoman clearly you are clueless as to what is going on here, so lemme help you out, in 2008 Ghana was 3rd, 2010 Ghana was 2nd and 2012 Ghana was 4th….now give me your track record from 2008, and stop rubbing yourself on zambia’s lucky shine cos we are soccer giants who proves it by being consistent in the AFCON tournament, currently in the world ranking search for Ghana, zambia, and finally go down way down the pecking order to try and find where DR congo lies….oh it seems I’m being harsh so why don’t we come closer? In the africa ranking we’d find Ghana in the best 5, zambia in the best 10 please where is congo? Look gentleman, before you can come and sit at the table of men try and wash your dirty hands ok? I’ve had it with your congo this congo that…YOU GUYS ARE NOT EVEN CONSIDERED amongst the lucky ones who can sneak past let alone win the tourney, is it our fault that you fail at these games? currently our 2008 record till now will make your whole nation proud if it were you so start talking some sense or refrain from commenting at all cos you have nothing better to offer.

  31. Congoman says:

@ Blackroze. You must be a true Moron to be talking about fifa ranking!. Lool.
You said it well, look what low ranking Zambia did to high ranking Ghana?. They
Did you bk side twice in 4 mouths!!. Hahaha.
And you’re opening your big mouth to talk about fifa ranking?, and more blah blah blah, about 4th and fith
Place??. Hey my broda!. What happened to the cup?.
Congo won CHAN in 2009 beating Your Ghana in finale!!.
So tell me about cups don’t talk nonsense of under 17 cup or third or fourth place
    Is crap. Garbage.

  32. Blakroze GH says:

Congoman you’ve confirmed to me that you’re frightenly dump, when we talk of trophies we are way better than you, when we talk of form you don’t hold a candle to us, you beat us in the Chan finals…what is chan? Ah that tournament that we beat you in the group stages and complacency made you beat us? That’s the only trophy you can boast of in this 21st century? Dude you are in serious need of enlightenment, see, it’s is the matches we play that is accumulated(gathered) to form an average score which we base on that to give the over all ranking, so if you claim to be matured you won’t hide behind your pc or phone and post something my junior brother in stage(primary) 3 won’t associate himself with, man it’s either you are purposely disgracing yourself or you are less than 12years old….either way I fail to understand why I’m even minding you cos “I never argue with a fool lest he brings me down to his ignorant level and beats me with experience.”

  33. Congoman says:

Listen Blackroze. Please stop making a fool out of yourself.
And please try to be short n specific on your comments. Couse’ you think
You’re intelligent?, but when I analyse your way of thinking I come to a conclusion
That you’re just an other proud Ghanaman who refuses to see and admit that Your Ghana
Has been a flop in 20th century, and you guys have yet to lay a hand on a simple cup since???
.Over what?. 30 or 50 years??.please tell me.
At list we got the CHAN which you have yet to win in two attempt.
What has the BS senior won since 1982??.(third place).oh no the BS won
Fifa ranking!!.LooooL. We will show you on Sunday the meaningless of them ranking
    Bullcrap..

  34. Troy says:

When I find this intriguing, even with 4,6,9 nations zambia and the so called Congo couldn’t even qualify to. Play the tourney. Don’t blame Ghana for Being the Best then qualifying and winning it. Now let’s talk about Modern Football. When was the last time Germany England won a cup? And can u tell me what they are in modern football? Giants they are. Winning Cup is not all it entails in football tho its an accolade to recognize the Best at that time. 2012 Zambia has been Best in Africa and that’s only once “2012″ (senior side) so let’s see by the time they win it for 4 times where Ghana will be. Not forgetting their Youthful Side too. Because there’s more to been a footballing Nation. Than winning just 1 cup(senior side)

    • PIG says:

I guess by your reasoning, Nottingham Forest which won the Champions league in the 1970s and 80s is better than Chelsea(who have won it just once), Man City, Asernal, Tottenham who have never won it right? Lets face it, Ghana are living on past glory and the sooner Ghanaians faced reality the better. The Congo Dr you scolding equally have a rich history. They have won the AFCON twice and at a time it was bigger, they were THE FIRST TEAM in Africa to play in the World Cup finals. This surely is history that should be respected but they dont carry themselves around with this BIG TEAM tug that has been Ghana’s undoing.

Lets look at the statistics with a team, that you have roundly branded a small team in the past 21 years
      1992(Ghana-runners Up, Zambia-QF)
      1994(Zambia-runners up, Ghana-QF)
      1996(Zambia-No 3, Ghana-No 4)
      1998(Both knocked out 1st round)
      2000(Ghana-QF, Zambia-first round)
      2002(Ghana-QF, Zambia-First round)
2004(Both Ghana & Zambia failed to qualify)
2006(Both knocked out in first round)
      2008(Ghana SF, Zambia 1st round)
      2010Ghana-runners up, Zambia-QF)
      2012(Zambia-winners, Ghana-QF)

During this period, the two teams have met twice in the finals and on both occasions, Zambia have triumphed. Now, what we see here are two evenly marched teams, and infact, Zambia can even claim to be superior since the two occasions they have met, Zambia have won, and during the same tme, they have also won the cup. Ghana on the other hand have been more consistent.

Therefore, far from the picture Ghana fans like to carry, Ghana is not in different league to that of Zambia. We cant say the same thing for Nigeria, Cammeroon and Egyp, which are clearly better teams in the last 20 years.

Favourites they always are but to be honest, Ghana are just an average African team.

  35. Troy says:

If u won the CHAN with your junior Team. Ghana has World Cup and also winning the CHAN twice with their under 20′s. But this Congo Man dude are rejoicing in Zambia’s glory or your own Country’s glory?
how many years did it take Zambia to win their First Ever AFCON title? If u say for the past 29years Ghana is without a cup?

  36. Wait a minute says:

We not talking about a tourney with only 8 teams….the question is have ever won it with twice that number, the answer is no….u got 3 weeks to prove it.

  37. Troy says:

Ghana/Ghanaians don’t parade themselves as favourites or Big team. Our records and Team statistics speaks for the Team, From Junior Side to the Senior side.
