Tight Premier League schedule responsible for Top Four cancellation - GHALCA

GHALCA say the tight Premier League schedule is the reason for cancelling their Top Four tournament.

The club welfare body decided to call off the pre-season competition after a meeting on Tuesday - weeks to the original start date of the competition.

Many believe the body’s inability to raise enough money by way of sponsorship is the reason for the competition being scrapped for the second successive season.

But GHALCA Vice chairman Isaac Koomson explains it is due to the tightness of the Ghana Premier League schedule due to a FIFA directive to have all leagues around the world end by May 15, 2014.

“The calendar had become very tight following the FIFA directive on the date to end all leagues,” he said.

“We then realized most of the teams have just started pre-season training and that they will not be at their best by the time the tournament starts.

“Fans will therefore not enjoy the good football we intend to offer.

“So all these factors combined saw us arrive at the decision to call it off.”

Asante Kotoko, Berekum Chelsea, Medeama and Ebusua Dwarfs who were to compete in the tournament will now have to alter their pre-season plans due to the competition’s cancellation.
