Former Wolfsburg star CK Akunnor admits he found it difficult being captain of Ghana as the one who took over from legend Abedi Pele.

The 40-year-old assumed the captaincy of the Black Stars in the aftermath of the disappointing 1998 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Burkina Faso when Abedi Pele retired from international football.

Akunnor was skipper of the Black Stars for two years and led the side to the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations which was co-hosted between Ghana and Nigeria.

But in narrating his international history with the Black Stars to the Presidential Commission, the former Wolfsburg captain revealed he was challenged by the fact of having to take over from Abedi Pele.

“Getting into the shoes of Abedi Pele wasn’t easy at all,” he disclosed to the commission on Monday.

“He was such a huge figure and I had to be the captain after him so it wasn’t easy.”

Akunnor went on to win 41 caps for the Black Stars over a ten year period and scored 12 goals during this time.
