Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari has rejected the unwanted ‘bad boy’ tag insisting he wants a quick return to the Black Stars in the wake of his indefinite suspension from the national team for unruly behaviour.
The AC Milan is battling to rid himself of the image of a bad boy after he was expelled from Ghana’s World Cup camp in Brazil for physically attacking a Ghana FA official.
The 29-year-old physically attacked Medeama Sporting Club owner Moses Armah without provocation during a meeting over the unpaid Black Stars appearance fees at the tournament.
He was suspended indefinitely for the attack on Mr. Armah, adding to several incidents since he joined the national team as a teenager which seem to have damaged his reputation.
But the AC Milan star is refusing to admit that he is a disruptive character.
“Am I a bad boy? The fact that I am a bad boy, excuse the term, is rubbish,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
“People have a false picture of me and I want to prove that I am a quiet person on and off the field.
“I am not saying that I have always been a saint, but I am now grown up, I feel different and everyone who knows me knows I stand for the truth and I hate cheating.
“I might have gone wrong a few times because I am human but it is not as the bad boy as people think I am.
“As for those who judge me badly as a footballer, I think they don’t know me too well. This could be my year.
“My objectives are to take us back to the Champions League and to win something in this shirt, and to return to the national team because I can never turn my back on Ghana.
Muntari was also involved in a tirade with Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac at the 2010 World Cup finals and nearly got sent home.
At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, he was thrown out of camp by coach Mariano Barreto and even threatened to quick international football at age 20.
