Sulley Muntari says he and his new AC Milan team-mate Michael Essien must concentrate on their club duties before thinking about the FIFA World Cup finals.

Essien, who was lacking game time at English side Chelsea, moved to the Serie A for regular playing to remain match fit for June's showdown in Brazil.

But Muntari says his international team-mate should make reviving Milan his topmost priority.

"Essien is happy and he’s a great player, we all know his talents. He has a lot of experience in Europe and has played for big clubs," Muntari said.

"Now he’s here at another great club. He’ll be thinking about how he can help this team. First comes Milan and then our national side Ghana.

"I don’t know why Essien wasn’t playing at Chelsea. Sometimes that’s the way it goes, you can’t find space in one team and then you do well for another."

Essien is expected to complete his move to San Siro on Monday after completing the first part of his medical at the La Madonnina Clinic on Saturday.

Milan are 11th on the Serie A league table and will travel to Cagliari on Sunday.
