The Executive Director of the Center for Policy Analysis, Dr. Joe Abbey, says cogent explanations are needed by the Ghana Statistical Service to put to rest the raging controversy over the state of the Ghanaian economy.

Dr. Abbey said as the only state institution responsible for the collation of data on the economy, the Ghana Statistical Service?s expert interpretation and explanations will do the nation lots of good.

He was contributing to discussions on the raging confusions surrounding comments by the running mate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that the economy is not in a good state as portrayed by the ruling government on Joy News Television?s current affairs programme, pm: EXPRESS.

The former first Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana accused government of doing little to salvage the economy contrary to public expectations.

?It?s time the Ghana Statistical Service broke its silence and explains the figures depicting the true state of the economy?, Dr. Abbey said.

He said the controversy is rooted in certain actions of the President himself. ?The President of the country is saying to us I have heard lots of argument challenging things so I have gone to the market to see things for myself. He could easily have taken the technical position that I don?t have to go to the market and proceed to call on the Statistical Service to clarify?, he said.

A senior member of the NPP Communications Team, Kwabena Sarpong blamed the NDC for dragging themselves into the raging controversy.

He accused the party of being insincere from the beginning.

But a deputy Minister for Finance, Fifi Kwetey disagreed with the assertion but rather accused the NPP of engaging in politics of figures.

He expressed the willingness of his party and government to avail themselves to any attempt to subject existing economic figures to genuine checks.
