Stephen Appiah getting set to claim the giant trophy for their win over the Gargo XI side
By Ameenu Shardow
Defender John Boye was amongst the goal scorers when the Stephen Appiah XI beat the Mohammed Gargo XI in the opening game of the peace campaign.
It took just five minutes for the Stade Renne stopper to open the scoring in the highly entertaining game at the Tamale Sports Stadium on Monday.
Their lead however lasted just three minutes as Kwame Ayew belted in expertly to draw the Gargo XI level.
Mahatma Otoo thought he had restored the Stephen Appiah XI side’s lead with a well placed shot but was denied impressively by Memunatu Suleymana.
The former first choice goalkeeper of the Black Queens was however unable to keep out Hassan Mohammed’s effort as he made it 2-1 in favour of the Stephen Appiah XI before the halftime break.
Kenneth Okoro then wrapped up the victory deep in the second half despite a staunch fight back mounted by the Gargo XI.
The match is the first of a series of events to follow in the peace campaign being organized by the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana in conjunction with the National Commission for Civic Education geared towards raising enough awareness of the need for peace in the December 7 general elections.
