The Essipong stadium is best suited for theater rather than football due to lack of funds accrued from gate proceeds, Western Regional Sports Development Officer Bredford Amui has claimed.

The outspoken official says the low income garnered from gate proceeds during league matches is making it increasingly difficult to maintain the edifice.

The 20-seater stadium built as one of the new venues during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, has become a monstrosity as it finds itself in a deplorable state.

The situation which is not peculiar to the Essipong stadium has again brought to the limelight the country’s poor maintenance culture forcing the administrative officer to offer a better use of the edifice.

“We do not get enough money from football matches that are played at the Essipong Stadium so I would rather wish that the stadium is converted to a theatre where weddings, naming ceremonies and other entertainment events can be held in the facility,” he told Atinka FM

“In fact when we rent the conference room for an event, we charge Ghc 600 and when we get two of such events in a week, we get Ghc1, 200.

“However, when football matches are played at the stadium, we don’t even get Ghc 500 at the end of the day.”
