Selling Michael Essien Would Be Right Move for Blues

Posted On Wednesday, 29th August 2012

Michael Essien's future at Chelsea has been hugely speculated

Selling Michael Essien would be a difficult move for Chelsea, because the Ghana international is a fan favorite and has played very well for the club since arriving to Stamford Bridge in 2005.

However, injuries and other midfielders being brought in through the transfer window have made Essien expendable for the right price.

It’s hard to see Essien having much of a future with Chelsea, considering his recent injury problems and the fact that Ramires and John Obi Mikel both excel defensively in the midfield. Raul Meireles is also capable of playing as a defensive midfielder.

He made 14 Premier League appearances during the 2009-10 season and then was able to play in 33 league matches the next season. However, Essien could only participate in 14 league games last year.

Just a few years ago, he was arguably the best defensive midfielder in world football, but sadly, he is no longer able to play at this level.

With Chelsea signing many midfielders in the transfer windows over the last few years, it’s hard to imagine Essien playing a large role with the club going forward.

At 29 years old, Essien isn’t able to battle through injuries like he used to. Even though he has three years left on his current contract with the club, selling him now is the right move. Playing first-team football is the best decision for his career at the moment, and he won’t get that opportunity too much at Chelsea.

His experience would be tough to lose, but Ramires, and especially Mikel, have won multiple trophies with the Blues and represent a bright future for the Chelsea midfield.

Essien is one of the best players in the history of the club, and he will never be forgotten when he does make his exit from Stamford Bridge.

His amazing goal against Barcelona in the semifinal of the 2009 Champions League is one of many moments that Chelsea fans will never forget.

Selling Essien would be difficult, but it’s best for both sides to move on.

  3. Dr Who says:

Di Matteo has a lot of confidence in the players that played active roles in winning the champs league so never will he bench any of them for Essien.its better for Essien to move on & stop that captain planet mentality of winning back his position.meanwhile age is not on his side.

  4. jay why says:

It is true my guy,but my concern is dat he does not have much time to spend on bench again,it is better 4 him to join the club dat want him fastly so that he will not rust on bench and playing nothing in chelsea.

  9. Enoch says:

With Di matteo, Essien has no future at chelsea. He should make a move but not to the Turkish club that has been reported to be interested in him. They nerly killed the career of Appiah.

  10. DEZY says:

YOUR COUNTRY WILL ALWAYS BLESS YOU WHEN YOU ALWAYS ACCEPT THEM.THEY WILL ALWAYS TAKE YOU EVERY WHERE YOU WANT TO GO BUT IF YOU MAKE YOUR SELF TOO BIG YOU WILL END UP TO BE A CRIPPLE..SO KOFI ESSIEN PRAY TO BE PART OF BLACK STARTS AND SEE WHERE YOU WILL BE AS FOOT BALL IS CONCERN.

  12. focus says:

He’s never advocate for his inclusion into the BS since he went on indefinate leave so stop your nonsense comment!!Also till chelsea decide to sell him ,he’s still at chelsea and you don’t run away from a problem, you deal with it!!l really don’t understand you guys!!why youwant him to leave chelsea whiles he himself wants to stay,it’ his job, self esteem and money, and only him ,yes him can decide for himself!!

  15. tiger says:

Well said DEZY. I like your comment. You have said it all.
@Chindo, i disagree with you. We made him who he is today but he ignored us how can we pray for him again? If YOU make me a rich man and i never give you anything you need, will you keep on praying for me to become one of the rich man in the world? Think before you talk.
Kwadwo Asomah is going to become a great player in de future because our daily prayers. We must pray for players who are still play for black stars.
I strongly believe that if essien returns to black stars he will get more playing time at Chelsea.
Essien will never success without our daily prayers. I’m not against Essien but trying to make him understand that playing for Ghana is more important than Chelsea.

  16. KBSA says:

tiger, a person success does not lie in your prayers,it lies in God’s grace. Essien has actually succeded, he’s done what most of us are fighting to do now a nd only at 29……certain comments sound nice but in reality ther are crap, he succeded before you even knew him.
