Kotoko's experienced midfielder Jordan Opoku has sparked a huge controversy by saying that the lack of local players in the current Black Stars makes Ghanaââ¬â¢s top-flight league unattractive.
Opoku wants coach Avram Grant to reserve a quota of a number of slots in future squad to players playing only in the domestic top-flight to encourage players in the local league and encourage them to stay in the country
ââ¬ÅIt is every playerââ¬â¢s wish to play for the Ghana national team so it is disheartening that the local players are always overlooked by the leaders because they think weââ¬â¢re not good enough,â⬠Opoku told Kumasi-based Otec FM.
ââ¬ÅThe local players must have a quota in the team and it must be enforced by authorities so that they can enrich the local games with their experiences they will gain on the international stage. If you are a local player and you are not unhappy about the negligence by previous coaches then I believe you're not a good player.ââ¬
He added: ââ¬ÅI'm always frustrated with the actions of the football leaders because I can see I'm doing my best but it always go unnoticed which is very bad, letââ¬â¢s hope it changes under the new directorate.ââ¬
However others disagree strongly with him saying the Local Black Stars is the chance to give the opening for home-based players to show their talents on the international scene.
Others also say the Black Stars should be reserved only for the best players the country has regardless of where they play. They say reserving a quota for the local league means undeserving players make their way into the national team even if there are better players playing outside the country.
Where do you stand? Do you think Opoku's idea is good? Why should home-based players be given preferential treatment? Do you think it is a bad idea? Make your views known in the box below
