Ex-Ghana defender Sammy Kuffuor has rubbished claims by his former U17 national team-mate Yaw Preko that all Ghanaian players have age-cheated in the past.

Reacting to the news that over ten players of the current U-17 national team had been sent home for failing the MRI scan which checks ages, Preko was quoted to have said it was an open secret in the nation’s football.

But in a counter response to the subject matter on Supersport’s Soccer Africa program, Kuffour who is now an in-house pundit on Supersport, denied ever cheating age-wise.

“I met Yaw Preko in the national team. He was my senior, he was there before I went,” Kuffuor said.

"We come from different backgrounds, different environments. Maybe they did it for him where he came from but me they didn’t do it for me. I played with my real age.”

The former Bayern Munich defender who played for all of Ghana’s male national teams at every level, making his debut at Italia’91 as a mere 15-year-old.

He was Preko’s teammate as Ghana won the U-17 World Cup in 1991.
