Revisit registration rules ? Affotey Agbo

Posted On Wednesday, 2nd May 2012

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo is asking the Electoral Commission to take urgent steps to address the issue of rampant break down of gadgets at registration centres.

The Regional Minister believes such a move will reduce long queues at biometric registration centres across the country.

According to him, the situation where large numbers of qualified voters queue for long hours with some keeping vigils at registration centres was unacceptable.

Speaking at a regional parade in Tema to mark May Day, the Regional Minister noted that the Electoral Commission?s performance in the past shows that it has the ability to ensure an incident-free exercise.

The Regional May Day parade, organised by the Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC), was on the theme ?The Role of Workers in Securing Peaceful and Fair Elections?.

Dorcas Amuquandoh, Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the TUC reaffirmed the commitment of organised labour to help deepen democracy as it was a prerequisite for economic growth, but added they would not hesitate to raise their collective voice to make their demands known.

?What the labour movement is demanding this year however is peace as Ghana goes to the polls in December?, she said.

Labour consultant, Austin Gamey, later in an interview with Joy News Television said conditions of workers have improved remarkably but urged employers to concentrate more on improving safety and health at the work place.
