Real Madrid midfielder Michael Essien fires Barcelona title warning

Posted On Monday, 1st October 2012

Michael Essien believes Real Madrid can win the Spanish La Liga

Real Madrid midfielder Michael Essien has warned Barcelona that despite their difficult start to the season they will fight for the La Liga title.

Barcelona have taken eight-point lead over their arch rivals after just six matches of the season which has sparked fears that they could be runaway winners of the title.

The two sides have dominated Spanish football but Real Madrid’s shaky start has left them sixth on the table.

Essien, who joined the club last month on loan from Chelsea, insists Real Madrid will challenge for the title this season.

“We are talking about Real Madrid, the greatest club in the world. Every player would want to be here. I’m just Michael Essien and eventually I hope everyone will know me here,” he said.

“It was a difficult start, but sometimes you see yourself in this situation. We have won two straight games and hopefully we can extend the streak it to three.

“Every game is important, and we need to earn the right to get more points and fight for the title.”
