Rahim Ayew wants brother Andre to be handed Black Stars armband

Rahim Ayew has touted the leadership qualities of Andre Ayew

By Patrick Akoto

Ghana midfielder Rahim Ayew claims his brother Andre is the ideal leader the Black Stars require to end their trophy drought on the continent.

There are many who have touted the leadership qualities of the Marseille winger after he captained the country’s under-20 team to win the World Youth Championship in 2009- a historic  feat chalked by an African nation in the 33-year history of the championship.

The Black Stars are desperate to end a 30-year wait for an African title after missing out on the crown at the 2012 African Cup of Nations held in Gabon and Equitorial Guinea.

Ghana legend Mohammed Polo has been critical of the leadership qualities of John Mensah and wants him replaced and the SK  Lierse midfielder claims his younger brother can  drive the team to success.

“This guy wants to win trophies and maybe as captain of the Black Stars he would win us the Fifa World Cup,” Ayew is quoted by the Finder Sports newspaper

“They say an African country can win the World Cup but I think Andre can lead the Black Stars to do that,”

“ Not because he is my brother but because I have seen those leadership qualities in him,”

“If you look at the three boys, Andre has the character of my dad a lot. Being leader on the field of play entails so many things and not everyone can be a leader,”

“You can see from the under 20 World Youth Championship and he won it. So why don’t you give him the captain’s armband?.

Ayew took temporal charge of the captaincy role during the quarter final game at the 2012 Nations Cup against Tunisia where his goal sent Ghana through to the semi finals.

An agent of confusion in the BS.

  2. NANA YW says:

do u think that the BS captain is for the a family? who are you to tell the Akwasi APPIAH what to do.

  3. Geography says:

No! he did not even show up to this friendly. If he was a leader he would have convinced his coach to let him come!!

Also he is not next in line!!!

  4. Sergeant says:

Its not yet time for this.Andre‘s time will come but not now.

  5. nii adama says:

Dis guy cnt b serious, adre’s arm aint strong enuf..he is an excellent playr no doubt but we need a mature captain.

  6. emmanuel says:

dont make me laugh.who is talking?APUUTOOR

  7. Opiah says:

We desparete to win the AFCON….point taken but making BS family business is not the answer, this is clear evidence of dis-unity in the team.

  8. D light says:

U r wrong my Bro @KASSBAK. Rahim ayew is very right abt DEDE. He is a real fighter who has been gened to B a leader. Luk at his attitude on the pitch when playing for Ghana… He plays wit some die-hard spirit dat differentiates him frm the Lots- he neva gives up n always result oriented. DAVID in the Bible was viewed as a leader by the Isrealites long b4 he became a d KING. His treacheries, sacrifices n Bravery can b synonymous to ANDRE’S. Andre was a Grass unda Dechamp n was treated like a trash wen he had injuries in his early OM Careers. He was demoted to the wilderness of french futball but was able to single handedly power Arvignon to the Elite division. He wasn’t only chastised & lampooned in his club, but Ghanaians transfered the hate they had for his fada to this boy though he was young. But he neva gave up n retired like some of his colleagues. Till 2day we still accuse him malliciously.
Its only few pple who cld go tru his ugly xperiences n neva cramble. He is a real leader in his speeches, postures & plays- if anyone has xperienced a shoulder injury b4, he/she wld undastand the Troyancy of Dede. He cld hav easily giving up… But patriotism n the will for victory kept him going despite his numerous shoulder dislocation. He knitted his teeth tru out the tournament. Its the reason the french media call him ‘MEL GIBSON’. His mates only accuse him wrongly bcos of ENVY! But his oppositions will only make him reach a New Position. KUDOS MY CAPTAIN…

  9. black man says:

you guys can’t be serious? b by pass all the SR players and than handle the captaincy to the youngest player in the team!can you imagine what would the Sr players feels or what would be become black stars? the evidence has showed how we Africans don’t like disrespect….

  10. MAWUDEKA says:

on the more serious not i think rahim is right

  11. crusader says:

the black stars is sinking because he lack a true leader. but, trust me, it will wreck entirely if that over ambitious character is handed the arm band. someone must tell that rahim to shut the fuck up.

  12. crusader says:

sorry., i mean the black stars is sinking because its lacks a true leader

  13. Richie says:

waaa look instead of fighting for your place in the black stars, look at what he is saying. Shut the up!

  14. bigeddy says:

Rahim Ayew should think b4 he talk,da black stars already has a captain and such comments will only bring division…Don’t be a fool Rahim Ayew!

  15. KWAME NAAGBEWA says:

It’s time for John Mensah to retire and it will soon show for everybody to see.
I find it difficult believing Sulley Muntari will be back unchallenged.
Asamoah Gyan is next in line, but will he take it?.
After that, almost all the remaining players are Andre Ayews Colleagues he captained at U20. talk of agyemang Badu, inkoom, adiyiah, bokye yiadom e.t.c
Are we not going to give him the arm band when his time comes, Just because his father has been Captain before? that will be discrimination! Andre Ayew seems to be a destined Black stars captain and very soon it will show.

  16. KWAME NAAGBEWA says:

Whether some of you who hates his hard working father like it or not. Every Leader is naturally Ambitious.

  17. fii says:

he shld shut up…his tym wil come.hw can he jx b mde captain lyk dat.

  18. Ayew always want to dei for the nation but he is too urng, his sino’s there.

  19. Young says:

Stupid article – I can’t believe it was published. I love Dede and all but this Rahim guy can’t be serious.. Dede is wayyy too young for such a position..

  20. eshun says:

Ayew can be a very good leader. Naturally he is good and very soon it will get to his turn. He is a better leader cos he speaks good both french n English, he is hardworking young man.

  21. Rasheed Quaye says:

Ah Rahim Paa,I have always respected you but I did not know you could stoop so low to make such unneccessary comments. How are you faring at your club?

  22. A concerned citizen says:

I like Andre Ayew but he must take time his time will come. Rahim should not have uttered at all because Andre is his brother and such comments can trigger a debate and confusion at Black Stars camp. Rahim Ayew should allow somebody to say it instead of him goofing. There are seniors in the national team who must be respected as such.

  23. whyte dave says:

How old was christiano Ronaldo, Messi n Aaron Ramsey b4 they were given the captainship
? Portugal, argentina n Wales had seniormost players who cld succeed their pre- decessors but NO! leadership is not abt Age n d first to appear somewhere… Dat mentality is so ADAMIC, ACIENTISH & SO BABISH. Dis pull him down theory against d most hard working & ambitious BS player wouldn’t work. FRANCESCO TOTTI is the captain of AS ROMA, But the whole GIALEROSSI fans call DANIEL DE ROSSI d FUTURE CAPTAIN B’cos of leadership qualities he possesses. DEDE is similar to these GUY n there is nating wrong voicing it. Its only mentally- slaved person who cant delete emotions in his judgements wouldn’t see the qualities of dis genius. GH is blessed to hav dis chap… n wheather u like it or not, DEDE AYEW is a

Destined CAPTAIN- NO one can stop dis.. not even
    HATING HIM!

  24. mukmin says:

Dede is a natural born leader and his time will come he should be next in line after Sulley, Gyan should be demoted for him to go on a self imposed retirement shows a lack of mental fortitude and commitment and those are not characteristics we want in a leader. Neither should the captaincy be awarded to any other player who has taken a self imposed break.

  25. onye says:

before reading respect for Rahim 99% respect after reading 1%…..

  26. charles says:

are we talking abt qualities or age?Dede is the choice for gh

  27. pablo says:

Rahim paa, did he really say dat? probably he was misquoted, i hav to hear it from his own mouth, is he trying to pls him or wat,ah.maybe 5 to7 yrs time but not now.

  28. kimco says:

wouldn’t it be ironic that kwesi appiah gives him the captainship because he can speak both french and english, as eshun stupidly posted, seeing as same was done to take away his captainship and given to abedi ayew. Would be a nice turn out but we all know it won’t happen, not on akwasi appiah’s watch. Dede might be a born leader but it getting so much into hiss head that he’s willing to bully his way to attain that ambition. When you do that, you might end up with the arm band, sure, but also end up with a divided team of old and new players. He needs to gain the respect of, say, 95% of the camp. Right now he just has about 50% and that’s just not enough. You guys in ssupport of this really need to think this through rather that yapping away like the ignorant people you find on the street, u’re supposed to be elite in your thinking not offical parrots of ignorance. ”david was seen as a leader even though he was young blah blah …” c’mon people think this through.

  29. whyte dave says:

@ kimco why can’t we heed to d advise of nyaho tamakloe nd eradicate dis badluck old players, self impose retirees frm GBS? den we’ll have d rest 50% on dede dat he can lead d rest winning trophys for GH.

  30. Xymo says:

if u really want to help your nation to win a trophy, you don’t necessarily have to be captain. what is the big fuss about being captain anyway!

  31. Fifa One says:

Xymo simple as that and i second you 100%.

  32. Kay says:

Hate it or Love it. It is just a matter of time. Every superstar is ambitious. Messi and c Ronaldo are driven by ambition. Only an ambitious player can score 4 goals in a game. Unfortunately, loud mouth have tried to kill this boy’s ambition the way we did same to his dad. He is a better leader than all the snr players and the earlier we realize it the better. Ayew is a blessed captain who will bring the FIFA world cup to Ghana. Rahim is spot on.

  33. DEDE FOR CAPTAIN says:

I CAN TELL HOW STEREOTYPE MINDED MOST OF YOU ARE BY READING YOUR POSTS.IT IS HATRED THAT MOST OF YOU HAVE FOR ANDRE..I SAY ON AUTHORITY ANDRE AYEW WILL CAPTAIN GHANA TO CAN 2013 OR WE WILL GET KNOCKED OUT IN THE GROUP STAGES………PERIOD

  34. John Brown says:

The Black Stars is like an old woman that can’t conceive. Senior players who have kept their old bodies well toned but cant play for 90 minutes anymore. They have fooled you all by reducing their ages by as much as 10 years in some instances and are no longer as competitive as when they were younger, but we keep on calling for them to be in the team and continue to resist the inclusion of the younger players who can compete but are lacking in experience. It’s time to rebuild the BS with younger players and that means having a young captain. Andre Ayew is the perfect choice, but he must be manged and directed very well by the technical team. 30 years of senior players, expatriate coaches and nothing to show for it.

  35. Ndolaman says:

I see division in the Ghana camp because of fighting for position. This is the reason why u guys were using juju at AFCON 2012. Remember china will hamer u by 2 : 0 . then Zambia in kumasi will demolish u by 1:0.

  36. pk says:

u so guys think dat oldman john mensah is still good enough to captain the blackstars a captain hu cant give u a full 90 mins game hu lacks leadership skills and a whole lot to top it all lies aba his fitness think again
who else has the leadership qualities save these three men paintsil muntari and dede

  37. kimco says:

i just don’t see dede as captan material yet. And what do we get from hating the guy, what is wrong with some of you, huh? His time will come, just not yet.
