Q&A Zambia coach speaks on his side win over Ghana

Posted On Monday, 11th June 2012

Renard Herve is coach of Zambia

After reigning African champions Zambia put back on track their campaign for Brazil 2014, Chipolopolo trainer Herve Renard expressed satisfaction with the win.

The French-born coach said collecting three points was the primary target. He said he was happy with the result and praised his squad for the result asserting that his Chipolopolo deserved to win because they played well.

Renard spoke to Cafonline.com after the 1-0 win at the new Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Zambia’s Copperbelt province.

Congratulations coach on your victory. You stated before the game that the fixture against Ghana would be tough. Are you satisfied with your team’s performance, particularly the result?

Thank you and congratulations to Ghana for the good competition. I am very happy with the result because we played well. We could have scored more goals and I hope at the end of the group matches, we won’t have to look back at the many chances we created today but put away just one.

You were very good in the first half and seemed to need an extra gear towards the end of the game. Did you become content with the first half goal and just played the last forty-five minutes to hold on to the lead in the second half?

We missed a lot of chances. We had three very good chances to win it by a good score line. Ghana did not create any chance throughout the match and our strategy of closing them in the middle worked well. It was difficult at the end because we only had one goal. Football can be like that. But remember that Ghana is a good team and we respect them for that. But my players showed a lot of character and the most important thing and target for us was to get three points and have our campaign back on track. Now we can look forward to the next games. We have Lesotho here, away and then Sudan before Ghana. It is a good path for us.

How significant was this victory?

It was very important especially after we lost in Sudan. It was difficult in Sudan and Sudan remains a very difficult venue for many teams because they are very tough at home. With this win, we can now look to the next two games against Lesotho and then Sudan before we can think of Ghana. We should have a good run in the qualifiers and keep our dream alive.

Finally, how motivated were you playing in a new stadium and before a vociferous 40,000 crowd cheering you on ad singing Chipolopolo throughout?

It was very important. For the fans, we would like to thank them as well. They were fantastic and it is always important to have supportlike that.

The Zambians gameplay worked to perfection. They contained Ghana and hit us on the counter. It seemed Ghana’s midfield was made up of only Derek Boateng. Asamoah Gyan must be coax to come back. J.Ayew and Adiyia’s naievity was exposed.
Football has evolved. Akwasi Appia should revert to the 4-2-3-1 formation which Milo n Stevanovic used. Akwasi’s 4-4-2 cant out play any double barrier midfield.
The Atsu guy should play behind a lone striker with Annan and Sulley/K.Asamoa making the middle 2.
D.Ayew if fit, can play at right midfield n Ishmael yartey on the left.
Inkoom has no justification to start again for Ghana.
    4-2-3-1 should be brought back.

If Ghana wants to play possession passing game, then the passes must be quick n forward-directed and not slow-backward passing.

    • Africanus says:

Kwasi Appiah went into the match without any tactical plan. We played away from home and needed only a draw. So we should have been the team playing 5 players in midfield to contain the Zambian attack. Instead we opened up and left our back open for the Zambians to exploit. Very very bad strategy… for Mr. Kwasi Appiah. If we had secured a draw we would have been on top of the table, and Zambian would have been on their way out of the competition.

  2. Papa says:

Ghana remains a formidable side and only needs to reorganise itself and have more respect for its opponents.

  3. amos zambia says:

Ghana is still a very good side and i agree that they just need to reorganise particularly on the tactical side of the game. They played as though they were at home and needed a win.we respect them.

  4. webster zimbabwe says:

    thnks zambia

  5. cofie says:

relax guys, we are going to Brazil! Zambia cannot go ahead of us.

  6. Charlie says:

Ghana is a good side. Our team (zambia) did not do much preps n I thot we wud lose to Ghana bt I ws shockd we won. Ghana is a popular team here n we love Ghana n its sad we seem to be in bad terms. During world cup we all left our books to cheer for da black stars. We r still sons if africa n may the best team represent Africa.
    One zambia, one nation.

    • CHIPOpolopolo says:

Charlie ur the only one who was shocked that we won… Do u think the stadium would hav been filled to capacity if we weren’t positive… Mayb ur a fan of Hockey, am sorry to say this my fello countryman. We beat Ghana coz were the champs of Africa, we cant fear anyone mayb Egypt not thez fello blacks!!! Ghana be humble if u want to succeed, look at that Ayew boy, Sagging in the game of football??? Thats pomposity and am a proud Zambian coz we again did it!!!!! Go Zambia gooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Kalaba says:

Ghana is a very good team. But yo players fail to realise – u cant win all the games all the time. I bet u, Chipolopol will win even in Accra. – Zambia.

  8. Sunnypa says:

@ cofie, low brain like u will never learn ur lesson…alwayz respect ur opponents no matter how small they are ?

  9. et canada says:

ghana can only make it to brazil if the coach let go inkoom and adiyia and start OPARE AND ATSU AND ALSO LEARN WHEN CHANGES ARE NEEDED BECAUSE TO ME HE HAS NO CLUE WHEN THE RIGHT TIME IS TO MAKE CHANGES. SOME PEOPLE SAY THE COACH IS DOING FINE BUT I’LL BET ANYBODY THESE PEOPLE WILL BE THE SAME PEOPLE THAT WILL PUT HIM IN A LAKE OF FIRE IF THE BLACK STARS WERE TO LOSE ANOTHER QUALIFIER. GFA BETTER ACT AND ACT NOW BECAUSE I STILL THINK KWASI APPIAH IS BETTER AS AN ASSISTANCE COACH NOT MAIN.

  10. chipolopolo Dj says:

Dats da game of football rather soccer…we share da happiness en sorrow. Let da best team come 4rm our group. According 2my opinion da competition is btwn Zambia en Ghana..

  11. chipolopolo Dj says:

Dats da game of football rather soccer…we share da happiness en sorrow. Let da best team come 4rm our group. According 2my opinion da competition is btwn Zambia en Ghana..bt us da Chipolopolo gut more chance of excelling…

  12. The DON says:

I think it is matches against Zambia that should be used to assess Akwasi Appiah, and not Lesotho..the goal difference we got cd come in useful later, but he shd learn to vary his game plan, he had no Plan B!!!!! Also, i still do not know why Adiyiah is playing ahead of Emmanuel Clottey??? Akwasi Appiah, pls look sharp, dont give Ghana coaches a bad name oooh!!!!

  13. Phillip C says:

Teams need to play corporately with credit given to individual talent. A blunt blade can effect the cutting thus, a blunt striking force does not get scores. But a game of football does have surprises. A country’s footballing era ussually undergoes a gradual transformation for perfection.
