Prince Buaben vows to elevate Partick Thistle from drop zone

Prince Buaben has vowed to make an attacking midfield berth at Partick Thistle his own this season.

The Ghana international was a shock January transfer window signing by Jags boss Alan Archibald last week.

Despite having only one training session under his belt with the Maryhill men, Buaben started in the 1-1 draw with Dundee United on Saturday.

And now the former Ajax youth has handed his new team-mates a boost by telling them they are more than good enough to win their SPFL Premiership survival fight.

The 25-year-old said: “My strengths are as an attacking midfielder who plays just off the strikers or striker.

“I like to get involved going forward but I also like to fight for my team.

“I’m really happy to have signed for Partick Thistle and it was great to get my debut against United.

“They are my old team and, of course, I won the Scottish Cup with them, but that did not stop me doing everything I could to help Partick win.

“Unfortunately, we only got the draw when I thought that we were the better team, especially in the second half.

“But the performance was good and we must take positives from it and when we come back against Motherwell we must build on it.”

But Buaben is determined to enjoy his time in Maryhill and confident Thistle will consolidate their top-flight status, with them currently floating just above a play-off place.

HE SAID: “We have some very good players here. Gary Fraser very much impressed me in midfield. He is a fine passer of the ball and has a strong shot on him.

“I was also impressed with Stuart Bannigan, so we have a lot of young players with many qualities at Partick.

“I see no reason why we can’t stay in the Premiership.”

While Buaben looked a bit off the pace early on, his class shone through as the game progressed.

The one-time Watford midfielder’s arrival, combined with the second coming of Fraser, may now allow Jags’ boss Archie to go with a two-man attack which would do much to help add predatory purpose.

Buaben said: “I did not have a pre-season after leaving Watford last summer and, although I have a lot of matches with Carlisle under my belt, you do miss that foundation of fitness.

“Of course it was also not easy to start the game after just having one session with my new team-mates.

“But as the game progressed I really felt more and more comfortable against United.

“I have many happy memories of my first time in Scottish football and now I am just hungry to create some more with Partick.

“This is the new challenge I needed and I will do everything I can for my new team and for the manager who has brought me here.”
