Police Service will deal with any threat to Ghana?s peace - IGP

Posted On Wednesday, 25th April 2012

The Inspector General of Police, Paul Tawiah Quaye has stated the Police administration?s resolve to ?deal with any threat to the peace and security of the country before, during or after? the December polls.

According to him, the Police Service will remain professional and abide by its constitutional mandate of maintaining peace in the build up to the December elections and beyond.

Mr. Tawiah Quaye made the comments at a press conference at the Police Headquarters in Accra Wednesday morning.

The press conference was to give the Interior Minister who was visiting the Police Headquarters an update on the country?s security status.

?Ghana is a peaceful and secure country and shall remain so before, during and after the elections? the IGP noted adding that Ghanaians should feel free to go about their normal duties as the Police will deal with any threats to the peace and security the country is currently enjoying.

He charged personnel of the Service to be non-partisan especially during this political season reminding them that they will bear any unpleasant consequences of their actions.

He also noted that the Police will deal with any person or persons who disturb the prevailing peace in the country.

He also asked the public to ?respect and use the existing Police structures to address grievances?.

On recent allegations of bias made against the Police Service by some political parties in relation to the ongoing biometric registration exercise, the Police Chief said the Service welcomes open and honest criticisms which will help the service grow but will not entertain negative criticisms.

The IGP also appealed to the National Media Commission, the Ghana Journalists Association, the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association, Editors Forum and civil society organizations to appeal to the media to ensure sanity prevails in the media.
