Penkwaasi, a suburb of Sunyani claimed bragging rights as the best community football team in the Brong Ahafo capital after winning this weekend’s edition of the Tigo Community Soccer competition.

They beat Sunyani Barracks 3-1 on penalties to win the cash prize and the trophy at stake as well as the gold medals. Sunyani Barracks won silver medals, cash and souvenirs while Sunyani Zongo finished third.

As always however, the Sunyani edition of the Tigo Community Soccer was not only about the winners. The quality of football and the level of talent on display during the two day competition was astonishing.

Former Asante Kotoko and Ghana Black Star player Godfred Yeboah who played in the competition as well said: “This competition is well organized and very competitive. Look at the young players and the way they play. Some of them can be playing for the national youth teams in this country. I am very proud that I have played in this Tigo Community Soccer competition and I will endorse it for all footballers. It encourages players to give off their best representing their communities.”

In all 240 players took part in the knockout competition which is by far the most competitive and biggest competition at the community football level.

Official scout of the Tigo Community soccer,  John Kusi Wusu also known as Bishop who represents some Italian clubs said “Sunyani has given a good account of itself. The talent here is top class. No wonder there are many Brong Ahafo teams in the Ghana premiership. This has been a great Tigo community Soccer event.”

Aside the football, Sunyani through the now popular Tigo Community Care approach donated over fifty pints of blood to the Sunyani General Hospital while more than 700 residents took part in a health screening exercise for various ailments like diabetes, high blood pressure and other lifestyle related diseases.

The Brands Image Specialist of Tigo in Northern Ghana  with oversight responsibility for Sunyani, Dennis Boateng was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and happiness of those who benefited from the medical attention.

“I saw many above 50- year olds coming to check for High Blood pressure and Diabetes. It was quick for them. Hospitals can have long queues but here everything went really smoothly. They were so grateful for the medical attention. The Sunyani hospital doctors were also very happy. This is why we say “Smile- You Have Tigo. Our passion is to manufacture smiles for the communities we work in. First the football. Then the Azonto dance and women penalties and finally the health screening and blood donation. No single event in Ghana can give more meaning to caring for the community than Tigo community soccer.” Said Dennis Boateng.

Since beginning on March 29th, the 2014 Tigo Community Soccer has visited three stops namely Kumasi, Mampong and Sunyani.

At least 150 pints of blood have been donated to beneficiary hospitals in the three venues while more than 2000 people have taken part in the health screening exercise.
