South Africa-based defender John Paintsil insists Kwesi Appiah excelled in his two-year reign as the coach of Ghana despite criticism from certain quarter about his coaching credentials.

The Ghana international says Appiah can boldly hold his chest up high for sending the Black Stars to the 2014 World Cup as well as taking the side to the semi-final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Appiah parted company with the Ghana FA as the Black Stars coach on Friday but some critics for the former international have questioned his coaching prowess.

The former defender led the Black Stars to qualify for the World Cup in impressive fashion and has discovered several talented players for the country yet his critics snipe on.

Paintsil has jumped to the defence of the ex-Black Stars coach insisting his record during his two-years as the coach of the side shows that he has done well for the country.

"After he was sacked, I looked at the statistics and he has done well for the country," Paintsil said.

"He captained once the team and he started coaching and did well to take the team to the Afcon semi-finals in 2013, and World Cup 2014 was also an achievement for him.

"I think he did well and I don't know what happened for the country to sack him. He is a good coach and has done well.

"The decision to let him go is not a bad thing for him; he should be proud of himself and I really enjoyed working with him," Pantsil added.

The GFA said they will announce the new coach by October's African Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea.
