Former Black Stars team manager Opoku Afriyie has advised head coach Kwesi Appiah to select only active players for the 2014 World Cup finals.

The ex-international striker believes only players with high work rate and experience will aid Ghana’s campaign of bettering the quarter-final feat chalked at the last tournament in South Africa four years ago.

“We need to have a winning mentality, so it is up to the coach to select players who have the ability to combine experience with high work rate to put Ghana through the group stage and beyond,’’ Afriyie is quoted by the Graphic Sports.

“If we are to progress from the group stage and go beyond what we achieved in South Africa 2010, then we should see our group as normal and strive to win all our matches, irrespective of the teams thrown at us at that stage.”

Ghana will play USA on 16 June in their Group G opener before engaging Germany and Portugal.

Head coach Appiah has been monitoring players abroad as he decides on which of them will make his final 23-man squad.
