Official: Ghana?s population almost 25 Million

The Ghana Statistical Service has released the final results of the Population Housing Census conducted September, 2010.

The final results of the census have been postponed on a number of times but the statistical service finally put the issue to rest at a press briefing held on Thursday.

According to the census figures, the number of females in the country outweigh that the males. Whereas the female population stood at 12, 633,978 representing 51.2 per cent, the male population accounted for 12,024,845 making up 48.8 per cent.

The Ashanti Region per the figures released by the Statistical Service is the highly populous region with a total population of 4,780, 380 and it is closely followed by the Greater Accra region with a total of 4,010,054.

The Upper West region has the least number of people with 702,110 people.

The 2010 Population Housing and Census figure showed an alarming 30.4 per cent increase from the 2000 figure of 18,192,079.

The results of the census indicated that close to half of Ghana?s population, 10, 617,930 are dependent that is those below 15 years and also those above 65 years.

According to the GSS, a detailed information on all topics in the census will be provided at a subsequent date.
