Odartey Lamptey urges coach Appiah to give Essien Ghana return

Posted On Tuesday, 16th October 2012

Michael Essien could make a return to the Black Stars for the 2013 AFCON final

By Patrick Akoto

Ex-Ghana international Nii Odartey Lamptey has urged coach Kwesi Appiah to give Michael Essien a recall into the Black Stars – and fast!

The 29-year-old is beginning to find his feet since he joined Spanish champions Real Madrid on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

The former Lyon man has not played for the Black Stars since he played in a 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo in Kumasi in 2011.

He was given permission to excuse himself from international duty after he suffered another setback last year which kept him out of action for six months.

But after churning out decent performaces for the Los Blancos Galaticos, the ex-Ghana Under-17 star believes it’s time for him to take another shot at the international stage.

“We need him (Essien) to be at the Nations Cup and there is no doubt about it,” Lamptey told Accra-based Happy FM

“I have been speaking to him and I believe coach Kwesi Appiah should extend an invitation to him.

“His experience and contribution to the ambitions of the team to win the cup will be immeasurable.

“I thought he could have gone a step lower but since he joined Real Madrid with Jose Mourinho in the helm of affairs, then there was no problem.

“He is a key figure for us and we need him fast.”

The Ghana star has suffered three career threatening injuries in three years.

  1. Young says:

God forbid he gets injured again., Ghana should be ready to pay him wages for a lifetime because Essien is a true patriot. He does his job very well with no questions asked. What a true STAR.. All footballers should be aspired to be like this gentleman..

  2. Kwesiaddaibuabin says:

Yes we need the mason, muntari.tnx coach K.Appiah Ghanaians are behind you.

  3. yurigagarin says:

Abosolutly ryt is abt tym he comes back….we need him badly…..very quickly.

  4. kuuku philly says:

Odartey is right,he should be called for the next friendly game to see how he blends in..appia call him nowwwwwwwwwwww…

  5. Nwankwo says:

And this is the same fool (Odartey) who kept on cheating about his real age and by the time he was retiring he was more than 45years old. These Ghanians are cheats

  6. Tiger says:

Essien is very special player for black stars but we also need other players like Muntari Sulley, KP Boateng, Owusu Abayie and Frimpong

  7. Dr Who says:

But is Essien ready to play at the AFCON if he is invited? In CAN 2006,he & Muntari swerved us so they did not go but rather went to the WC,in 2008,Essien had no option because we were hosting it.In 2010,we had to force him to Angola though he had somehow recovered from injury only for him to aggrevate his injury while training.Injury also took him out in 2012.Essien does not like to go to AFCON.He chooses club over country. He prefers the WC to AFCON.his reunion with Mourinho will make matters worse.Ghanaians have forgotten. Now that he is finding his foot at Real,he will see AFCON as a way to derail his chances of benching Khedira.though I love to see him at AFCON,personally I doubt if he will be committed to come.

    • Abrantie-In Da House says:

From your own points you gave above and the conclusion you made thereafter says you are no doctor but a fool!!
“In CAN 2006,he & Muntari swerved us so they did not go but rather went to the WC”. You and who did he swerve? Nkwasea su!!

“in 2008,Essien had no option because we were hosting it”. Oh he couldn’t swerve this time indeed!! If he comes, you have a reason for if he doesn’t you also have a reason for. Azaa doctor.

“In 2010,we had to force him to Angola though he had somehow recovered from injury only for him to aggrevate his injury while training”. Somehow!! Did you say somehow? Why do you force someone who has just somehow recovered from a long injury to a tournament??? More so, to no other tournament than AFCON, where referees don’t protect players? By the way, you and who forced him actually??

“Injury also took him out in 2012″. So far, that is the most sensible sentence you have used as a doctor and you have been objective here. Then again, you blew it all up with “Essien does not like to go to AFCON.He chooses club over country”. Would you like to go to AFON as a player, if that should be a tournament, where you have suffered 2 consecutive heavy injuries? Why do you think Essien should be different? Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying the guy wouldn’t come if called, cuz am not in his head but in my view, he even has to get a good psychologist to be there. Playing for the BS is not the army. Leave the guy alone… He has paid his dues, which you as a doctor and your whole family can’t boast of.

“He prefers the WC to AFCON”. Ghana has played only 2 WCs in our history. Essien has played one and couldn’t play the other due to the same injury, so on what do you base that conclusion of of yours?

By the way, I have question for you after watching this video.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJhNs4Kqu3g&feature=relmfu

      Does this guy look unpatriotic?

Be fair in your undoctorized judgements!!

  8. Paul says:

That’s true after 2008 afcon essien has nt played so extraordinary 4 the team so i think akwasi appiah shd install confidence in any player he calls rather than puting all hopes on one player

  9. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

WATS THE USE OF CALLING ESSIEN, MUNTARI, DEDE, GYAN, BADU, KWADWO ASAMOAH FOR ANY MORE FRIENDLIES BEFORE AFCON TOURNEY? WE ALREADY KNOW HOW THEY PLAY. WAT USE WILL IT BE TO U OR ANYONE ELSE TO CALL THEM FOR A NOV FRIENDLY? WAT IF THESE PLAYERS RE AGGRAVATE AN INJURY IN THIS NOV FRIENDLY? DONT CALL THEM FOR ANY FRIENDLIES. WE ALL CAN SEE HOW THEY PLAY. WE NEED ACTIVE, IN FORM 100 %INJURY FREE PLAYERS. IF A PLAYERS IS HALF FIT, DONT CALL THEM. I DONT CARE IF THEY R MARADONNA. USE THE REMAINING FREINDLIES TO ACCESS OTHER PLAYERS U HAVNT CALLED LIKE AFFUM, ABEYIE, B YIADOM, YARTEY, AND MORE LOCAL AND CONTINENTAL BASED PLAYERS….BASED IN EGYPT, S AFRICA ETC…

  10. Al says:

Definitely should just let him focus on his career for now…him and muntari. and use other talents for the afcon. now the WC qualifiers are a different story

  11. Dr Who says:

@Abrantie in da house, you are the most foolish person I have read his comments today.Essien played in 2008 AFCON and came on in the 2nd half against CIV in our 3-1 lost at 2010.That has been his effort at AFCON tournaments so far. That shd tell u how unpatriotic he has been.why didnt he play at AFCON 2006? You are either a kid or a toy gun so u dont know anything! Essien luvs WC but shuns AFCON.in 2006 we went to AFCON without & that was why he got eliminated at the group stage despite the fact that we have qualified for the WC & Stephen Appiah playing thro‘ pain.Just go to Wikipedia & check the number of matches Essien has played for GH and that of Painstil or John Mensah despite all of them graduating from U20 at 2001 and u will understand what am talking about.Essien luvs club more than country and its a fact.Painstil is gunning for his 5th or so Nations cup appearance.what can you talk about Essien. We read from some of our players talking about going to AFCON.Give me a quote of Essien talking about AFCON and I will show you how uncommitted he is!

  12. kimco says:

don’t you just love GSN: Omu nkyir3 wu nogu kraa. but ghana must learn to use inform players and not players with past glories. He isn’t ready, and we shouldn’t be on him like we can’t do without him. It’s tym we let go and build anew. The 2004 squad is gone, let build a better one from their foundation. Let make stephen appiah happy.

  13. Young says:

He doesn’t love club more than country. those of you who are biased in your judgement are useless to this forum. Essien has a contract to honor, his future to care for, his family to take care of.. he suffered 2 career threatening injuries featuring for Ghana which nearly cost him his career..Are you dumb or stupid? which one are you? Leave Essien alone and let him focus on his career.. I’d prefer to see him in the WC where champions meet.. not in a tournament where refs even forget to bring yellow/red cards to the game and dont protect players on harsh tackles.. FOH

  14. Kay says:

Essien, Muntari, John Mensah, Painstil, Gyan,,Derek, Vorsah and Abeyie need the African title more than the younger ones. This AFCON could be their last international match.
Let us support them to excel and stop all the negative statements.

    • Randy says:

Thank you Kay. If we lifted the cup the same people who are complaining and condemning will change their tone of voice. Ghana is only one country and that is all we have. Support and encourage every player.

  15. Blow says:

Is Essien ready? that is the question we need to ask ourselves. Akwesi is not stupid! Essien needs to be given more time unless he made himself available. As for Kevin, those calling for his return has similar egos like him. Akwesi really need to make some soul searching because the current team lacks depth.

  16. Dr Who says:

@Abrantie in da house, did you also answer my question before insulting me? An Abrantie is meant to be civilized but you are the exact opposite.

  17. kimco says:

whaaaaaaaaaaaaat! Did i just hear u guys ryt? The old guard need the trophy more so let play them even, IF, they are out of form or injury proned. Goddammit the amount of nonsense i hear everyday on this site is just unforgiving. They had their chance in three afcons, even one on home soil and they blew that one. C’mon u can’t be serious. Let’s think this through, do you want to win the trophy or make old guards happy? Ur choice

  18. dread says:

We don’t need Essien and Muntari now, they are half fit.Maybe world cup time,i said maybe.
