NPP Hasn't Weaned Itself Off Tribal Politics - General Mosquito

Posted On Thursday, 26th April 2012

Johnson Asiedu Nketsia, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stated that the recent infamous ethnocentric comments made by Member of Parliament for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong, must be seen as ?another stage in the planning and implementation of an orchestrated and well-rehearsed agenda of the NPP to throw this nation into chaos as a result of their inordinate ambition for power.?

Mr. Asiedu Nketsia, also known as General Mosquito, who made these comments at a press conference to react to recent inciting comments made by Mr. Agyapong, accused the NPP of having a history ?deeply rooted in the politics of ethnicity.?

The NPP stalwart was charged last week with treason felony, genocide and for engaging in acts of terrorism for inciting Ashantis against Ewes and Gas. Speaking on his own radio station, Oman FM, Mr Agyapong urged Ashantis to attack extracts from other ethnic groups who enter their shops.

But Mr Asiedu-Nketsia said these comments portend the tactics being hatched by the main opposition party ahead of the December polls.

He said despite all the effort by leaders such as Ghana?s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, to bring all the ethnic groups together, political groupings like the NPP ?both in theory and in practice [have] not weaned [themselves] off this canker of ethnicity.?

He quoted a study conducted by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) which concluded that ?ethnic polarization had worsened under the eight-year rule of former President Kufuor and the NPP.?

?It is no wonder that the UP tradition in all its history has never fielded a non-Akan as their presidential prime ministerial candidate.?

Mr. Asiedu-Nketsia stressed that despite all the hitches that have bedeviled the ongoing biometric registration exercise, the process has so far seen marked improvement in terms of security breaches as compared to the 2008 exercise,? adding ?those who care for the truth could check the facts for themselves.?
