No favourites for 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, says ex-South Africa goalkeeper Baloyi

No team should be considered favourites for next year's Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, according to former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Brian Baloyi.

No team should be considered favourites for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, according to former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Brian Baloyi.

Several countries including Ivory Coast, Ghana, Zambia and Nigeria are considered as the favourites for Africa’s flagship tournament.

“It is all about momentum and if any side can get a win in their first game, then anything is possible,” Baloyi said.

“That lifts the players, the technical staff and the fans.”

Baloyi said there had been surprise packages in most editions of the continental tournament, including 2012 champions Zambia, and he believed the 2013 showpiece would be no different.

“In just about every Africa Cup of Nations tournament of the last 20 years there have been more fancied sides going out in the first round, so anything is possible,” he said.

“Not many would have picked Zambia to get out of their group, let alone win the trophy.”

Baloyi was set to continue an initiative between the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Standard Bank, with fellow former Bafana player Neil Tovey, which will take the tournament trophy to Port Elizabeth this weekend on an ongoing tour to the five host cities.

Baloyi hoped the tournament would build on where the 2010 Fifa World Cup left off in showcasing the country as a host nation for major international sports events.

“The eyes of the continent will turn to South Africa in January next year and we want to show them what fantastic hosts we are and what a great footballing country this is.

“That is why we want to create a positive vibe among South African fans and really help them get behind the tournament.”

  2. junior mafia says:

If zambia make it out of their group they cant score any team in group D. Quarter final is da best fo zambia.

  3. obbie says:

Continue underrating Zambia in any better way you can. We do not even spend sleepless nights when people call us underdogs. If you want you can call us underdogs a hundred times but the truth is no team and i repeat, no team can beat Zambia in Africa. There is no class for Zambia in Africa, let alone in europe and other continents. To tell you the truth, Zambian goal keeper Kennedy Mweene is better than Adam Kwaresey, Stopilla Sunzu is better than Lee Addy, Rainford Kalaba is better than Kwado Asamoa, Jacob Mulenga is better than Asamoa Gyan, Emmanuel Mayuka is better than Jordan Ayew, Christopher Katongo is better than Andre Ayew.
That is the truth and it will be seen again at the AFCON 2013. I really want Zambia to meet Ghana so that we hammer you 3 times in a year. By the way, we shall shall hammer Ghana again next year at your own backyard for the 2014 W. cup qualifier but please no stones should be used on our players hence warn yourselves. We want to put this Ghana from our pockets into the shoes now. Ati black star where, not with Chipolopolo.i feel pity for Appia because he will not last in that job of his. He will be fired by Herve Renard. Enjoy watching Chipolopolo in SA People.

Opinion is like nose u get urs I get mine.May God help us.to my dear friend obbie.

  5. Maxwell Johnson says:

Seems like this obbie dude is high on cracks or something. How the hell can you compare your average players to ours, you have most of your best players playing in the SA, Congolese & Chinese leagues. TP Mazembe which most of your players play for were beaten by an amateur Berekum Chelsea side, a team that finished 6th in our league last season.

Your luck will run out soon in 2013, there will be no ghosts to help you guys win games this time around lol. The quarter final is the far you can get, I doubt if you can beat Nigeria & Burkina Faso. Cos if you cant beat Sudan & Uganda then I don’t see how you can beat these teams.

Ever since you won the 2012 AFCON you’ve lost 4 matches. Against Korea, Malawi, Sudan & Uganda. All these teams are average with the exception of South Korea, that’s not the hallmark of a CHAMP!! Our players have temperament for BIG games, they know how to rise to the occasion when it matters most. The only problem we’ve been facing is good preparation cos over 90% of our players ply their trade in Europe, we usually have little time to prepare for tournaments. Don’t raise your hopes high dude, I see your country getting DISGRACED in SA next yr.

  6. Paul says:

I see zambia being kicked out in the first round. Too much bragging is equal to early exit… Ghana is parading a new team called ‘the golden squad’ for this afcon jst wait nd see. Zambia goalkeeper will injure himself in the process of trying to stop one of the many goals that will enter his net. Mark my words!

  7. Fiifa 1 says:

There is no way Zambia can ever beat black stars again, you can ask South Africa and Ivory Coast, there is no way Ghana will loose to one particular country three in a role. watch out for this, the moment we will beat you, which will surely happen in 2013, your country will go down in football for more than 20 years to come with out winning any major tournament. You can cross check this and see it yourself and surely it shall come to pass.

    • Kwame says:

I pray we don’t meet Zambia if at all we make the semi-final cos they sure know how to stop us.

    • Bediako Asare says:

20 years without a trophy? How about 32 years without a trophy? That sounds like pretty much like Ghana. You do not even have any guarantee that you will win the 2013 AFCON. Keep trying harder. I don’t even see Ghana qualifying for the world cup. If Ghana qualify then PIGS shall fly.

  8. Tymer says:

Lreally wish my fellow Ghanaians will stop paying attention to these apology of champions. All they want is attention from big guns like Ghana and the rest, but no matter how the cat purrs, it can never roar like a lion. They are not in our class and we must endeavour to ignore them totally. They have nothing interesting to know about their average and overly physical players so they are constantly on GSN since theres always something going on with our world class players. Even tp mazembe have seen the light and are scrambbling desperately for Ghanaian players to give them that world class urge. Real champions do not brag after winning just a trophy, they work harder cos they know the bigger challenge is staying on top. zambians who come here should rather spend the time teaching their countrymen how to use condoms, and how to change their primitive sexual attitudes to reduce their ridiculous HIV figures.

  9. theprince says:

hahahaha these zambians are funny, i wonder how they will do if they go to the world cup and i know it will never be possible with these bragging mouth

  10. kimco says:

as if we ghanaians are any better. Have the temparament for big games? Wtf are u talking about, we lost to zambia in the afcon semi finals. Jesus christ i can’t believe this tripe. And yes most fo their players ply their trade in inferior leagues, so what, it makes our matter worse cos we boast too much of competent players yet they fail to deliver. i’d rather have players who play in poor leagues win me an african cup than so called better player who have tried all their lives and yet failed, even in their own backyard. Maybe it’ll be better if we relied more on the few competent local in our leagues as the core so we could achieve cohesiveness, not crazy imcompetent fools like gyan who arrive at tourneys so late and dressed in dubai clothes and compromised team tactics and go on to play woefully in the tourney.our prioty should be in cohesiveness not individual goodness.

  11. Bediako Asare says:

Ghana will win the 2013 AFCON when pigs fly!!!!!

  12. Obbie says:

I am repeating, continue calling Zambia as underdog. Having players who play in Europe does not make you superior. We have a lot of players in Europe but they can’t match Kalaba or Sunzu. The truth is MOST ZAMBIAN PLAYERS ARE BETTER THAN GHANA PLAYERS. You should know that Stopilla Sunzu is the best defender in Africa and Ghana strikers can’t much him. Tell me one Ghana player who is as creative as Kalaba or more. There is no one. Ghanaians never cease to amaze me, they do not want to accept that Zambia beats them. check your history guys, Zambia has always been better than Ghana, Ivory coast, Mali, Senegal etc. It is just Nigeria which manages to match Zambia at tonourments and Nigeria, its starting 1994. We are hoping to meet Ghana in the semi finals in SA. we really want to shut you up for the third time in a year. Our best striker Jacob Mulenga is back from injury which made him miss Afcon 2012. Ask Asare Nana who plays with him at Utretch. Mbesuma is fit now. i don’t want to mention Mayuka’s name here because am told if Ghanaians here or read this name, they instantly develop High Blood Pressure as some die while some admitted in hospitals. That Mayuka goal makes Adam Kwaresey not like his job. We shall hammer you at your own backyard next year. no stone throwers gentlement should be allowed to come an watch this game because Ghana will be banned from international football. I like seeing Kennedy Mweene in goal, ask Gyan to tell you who Mweene is.

  13. xwi says:

why are Africans so full of hatred? must we used abusive words when making our points? I now realized there’s definitely a big problem with us cos this is how it is on all african owned football sites. We need to grow up.
