Niger coach Gernot Rohr believes his team can cause a major upset at the group stage of the 2013 Africa Cup of Natrions as they face continental giants Ghana in their group.

After Wednesday’s draw in Durban, Niger learned they will face Ghana, Mali and DR Congo in a tough Group B.

Rohr took heart at being based in the coastal city of Port Elizabeth, as he says the hot and humid conditions will suit his players.

“We must learn and we must make progress”, he said.

“And why can’t we win our first ever points in the tournament. We think we have a lot to deliver”.

Niger lost all three group games, against co-hosts Gabon, Tunisia and Morocco at their first ever Nations Cup earlier this year.

Rohr had first-hand experience of watching Niger then, as he was coaching Gabon, but since his move north, Niger have qualified for the Cup of Nations at the expense of Guinea.

“In our group we have three of the best teams in Africa”, Rohr continued.

“We would like to make a surprise, but we know it’s very very difficult. We don’t have superstars, but we think we can handle it”.

If they are to do well in South Africa they will need striker Moussa Maazou to be at his very best.

Now at Tunisian side Etoile du Sahel, the 23-year-old has been amongst the goals for CSKA Moscow and Monaco in recent years.

His goal against South Africa in qualifying for the 2012 tournament helped Niger prevent Bafana Bafana from progressing.

Niger will not be one of the most heavily supported teams at the tournament, but the German-born manager has every confidence his players will feel welcomed.

“I think some people from Niger will come, I hope so. It will not be thousands of supporters, but the most important thing is not the numbers, but the quality,” he said.

“I think we will have very good support here.”

Rohr added his team will play a friendly match in November, against Togo, and one or two more before the tournament starts, with Tunisia mentioned as likely opponents.

Let him say whatever thing he want to say against us but remember that we are going straight to lift the trophy. This is our time

Let him run his mouth at least there is nothing to pay.If wishes were horses, beggers will ride.
My only fear is our preparation.
I have recapitulated several times on GSN about the too much involement of the GFA.
At the AFCON 2012 we all know what time THE AYEWS,Kwadwo Asamoah and Agyeman Badu reported.
Nyantakyi took bribes from MARSEILLE AND UDINESE and alow them to play their so called important matches and only reported two days to the tourney whilst the likes of Ivory coast,Zambia had their full squad at the start of the preparation.
Nyantakyi either took bribe or he is too timid, choked with inferiority complex so could not say no to UDINESE AND MARSEILLE.
The abysmal performance of the black stars with no team cohesion is still fresh. How come morons and pigs ZAMBIANS having a voice to talk when the OWNERS OF AFRICA is talking.
Moreover ADAM KWARESEY will be a bit rusty because of their winter break so the technical handlers need to outline a programme for him to mentain his sharpness. We would want to see THE HEROIC ADAM KWARESAY AGAINST BRAZIL KIND OF PERFORMANCE.
Akwasi Appiah should put his foot down and demand the full squard from beginning of his preparation programme. At least the FIFA rule is there but the likes of Nyantakyi will always want to line their pocket.
The sad thing is that in AFRICA we soon forgive and forget. It doesNt happen where l am leaving. The pressure from the press and the tax payer asking for a credible explanation why nyantakyi did not apply the FIFA rule would have caused him to resign.
Sad that POOR PLAVI was made the scape goat.Awasi Appiah a word to the wise is …………..
