Newcastle legend Shearer says Liverpool's Carroll deserves England recall

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer feels Liverpool striker Andy Carroll should be considered for an England recall after his Wembley heroics.

Shearer wrote in The Sun: “Andy said after the game that he never doubted his ability and I firmly believe that — but confidence is everything in football. Especially for a goalscorer.

“You don’t stop getting into scoring positions but you do think: ‘Where is the next one coming from?’

“He scored the winner at Blackburn in midweek and that gave him the confidence for Wembley.

“When he got on the scoresheet earlier this season he was then immediately left out of the team — but this time he was given another chance and the reward was a great fillip for him and Liverpool.

“I am pleased he is repaying the manager’s faith and he now has five league games and an FA Cup final before the season is finished.

“He will not thank anyone for saying it but at least his winning goals this week have got people talking about him and the England team again.

“Three months ago nobody would have been mentioning it.

“The last two games have gone well and he will know it was just the start for him.

“He will have great hopes this continues and after that, who knows, the England situation could be back on.”
