New faces expected in Black Stars squad today, four top players axed for AFCON qualifiers
Several new faces are expected when the Black Stars squad for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers is named later today as top names like Sulley Muntari and Kevin Prince Boateng will be dropped.
AC Milan star Michael Essien and goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey are also expected to dropped from the squad for next month’s matches against Uganda and Togo.
The quartet, who fell out with the Black Stars technical team at the recent World Cup, are not expected to be named in Kwesi Appiah’s squad for the start of the qualifiers.
Muntari was axed from the Black Stars squad at the World Cup with an indefinite suspension for physically attacking management member Moses Armah.
Boateng was handed a similar punishment for verbally abusing coach Kwesi Appiah which means both will not be considered for the two matches.
In the aftermath of the tournament it emerged that Essien refused to warm-up with his team-mates before the match against Portugal while Kwarasey questioned the competence of the goalkeepers’ coach.
This means several players who were not part of Ghana’s World Cup team are expected to be named in the squad to face the Cranes and the Hawks in Kumasi and Lome respectively to replace those who will be axed.
However, key players like Asamoah Gyan, Kwadwo Asamoah, Christian Atsu, Andre Ayew and Harrison Afful are all expected to be named in the team.
The Black Stars, who are four-time champions, begin their qualification quest in Kumasi on September 5, before flying to Lome to take on Togo four days later.
