The Member of Parliament for Asawase in the Ashanti region, Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has condemned a Daily Guide report alleging he took a 17-year-old girl to the altar on Sunday.
According to the newspaper, the MP married the girl who is a Senior High School graduate, as his second wife, at a ceremony at the Kumasi Central Mosque.
Alhaji Muntaka reacting to the story in an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Monday, refuted the publication stating that he was not ?too surprised about the behavior of Daily Guide,” and that, it “is gross irresponsibility on the side of the paper”.
According to the MP, the lady he married is not aged 17 years. He further added that, ?I?m a lawmaker; I know the law, Ghana you can only marry at 18.?
?The Girl is never 17 and they should have crosschecked their facts. This girl is way above 18 years,? he stressed.
Mr. Muntaka however fell short of making the age of his new bride public only to say it was a private matter and wanted to keep it as such.
?Whoever might have given them (Daily Guide) the information gave them wrong information,? he added.
The former Youth and Sports Minister urged child rights activists to take up the matter and investigate it to bring the truth to bear.
