Money not a factor for Ghana players ahead of 2013 Africa Cup of Nations

Money is not the overriding factor driving players to play for the Black Stars, says Ghana Football Association President Kwesi Nyantakyi.

The GFA President has been reacting to the proposed financial package for the Black Stars at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations which has drawn mixed reaction.

With the package which includes a proposed $15,000 winning bonus generating much talk in the media, Kwesi Nyantakyi explains that Ghanaian players are patriotic enough to fight for the nation.

“At every particular point in time the money we pay to players is not what they demanded, they demand more than that,” Kwesi Nyantakyi said.

“Based on the inculcation of the virtues or the principles of patriotism and nationalism that they seem to imbibe, it sobers them to understand it is just not about the money but then they need to die for their country.”

Kwesi Nyantakyi says though the sport is awash with more financial investments there are other factors that players consider than the financially driven motives.

“You must also appreciate that back in their clubs, most of them who play in Europe earn more than what we give them here.

“So if it is purely about money they will not even come here, they will stay behind and play for their clubs.”
