Mohammed humbled by maiden Ghana call for Cape Verde friendly

Maritzburg United defender Awal Mohammed is full of thanks following his maiden call up to the Ghana national team.

The 24-year-old is part of a 21-man squad named by coach Akwasi Appiah for the November 13 friendly game with Cape Verde to be played in Lisbon, Portugal.

The ex Asante Kotoko defender gets the chance to impress with the Black Stars following a series of stellar displays in the South African top flight.

Mohammed is however very humbled by the invitation and wants to seize the opportunity to land a place in the final team for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

“I first want to thank God and my fans in Ghana for their prayers and support,” he told GHANAsoccernet.com.

“It is not easy to be called into the Ghana national team because of the abundance of good players both local and foreign-based and therefore I am very happy for this call.

“I look to work hard and do my best to get selected for subsequent national assignments and hopefully I will make it for the Nations Cup too.”

Mohammed stands a good chance of making the final cut to the Nations Cup to be hosted early next year in South Africa due to the growing injury concerns in the Black Stars’ rear.

The ex Fetteh Feyenoord player emerged last season’s Best Defender in the Ghanaian top flight after which he joined Maritzburg United.
