MLS star Dominic Oduro invited for Chile friendly

Posted On Thursday, 23rd February 2012

US-based striker Dominic Oduro is set to mark his Ghana debut after earning a call-up to play in the international friendly against Chile in Philadelphia next week.

The 27-year-old Chicago Fire striker has reportedly been on the radar of US coach Jurgen Klinsmann but will now have the chance to prove his striking potentials with Asamoah Gyan’s seven months break.

Oduro scored 12 times in 34 games and provided two assists in the Major Soccer League last season.

Ghana are in search for a new goal poacher after striker Asamoah Gyan took a temporarily break from the Black Stars.

YA very good call up. Dis guy is the dude

  2. pofka says:

WOW…surprisinly this is the guy who regularly portrayed as ‘kweku ananse’ in series ‘by the fireside’ way back in the 90′s…hosted by grace omaboe(maame dokono)

      • Fred Bortey Kyeremeh says:

Yes,that is true..Ananse that..He was my mate at Prempeh College(1997-1999).He is a speedster and will really do well for Ghana if given the chance and the patience to come into the team regularly…He plays more as a right winger and is capable of doing the damage when an opportunity avails itself..I just hope we don’t judge him with just one appearance..He may need more time.Wish Ananse the very best of best.

    • KD says:

This is not the guy who was regularly portrayed as “Kweku Ananse”. I was in Prempeh College with this guy and i also the “by the fire side” ananse. Dominic is a very good play and pace but will have to work more on his finishing.

      • bremansu says:

if u muust know, 3 different people played ananse in the by the firer side tv show?Ooduro was one of them. oduro was my class mate at KOTOKA JSS.a key player in our sch team.True.he played anase in by d fire side for our school. he.is different. from the 7great princes academy guy who also played anase for his sch in d same by d fire side.I think you are referring to the 7great princes academy guy. Infact he actually started before Oduro replaced him after that guy’s batch progressed from JSS TO sss. I was with him in the same school. I saw all their rehearsals at school before they went on set. Do u rremeber ”Kofi Nkrabia” in the movie ”Nkrabia”. That guy was also part of their squard. Last month we went to bury one of our mates and we were talking about Oduro that he should be called into the black stars to help with our striking situation. For us, wee are happy for him. Lets see what he brings. Go.oduro.go.we r proud of u…

  3. Bra Kwame says:

Mtschew….we always jump at everything and anything. If he is lucky enough to get a goal in the Chile match, we tag him as the saviour but we fail to realise that class is not just about one match. This is what happened to Kwarase. We must be careful to call players who can perform at every time of the day, not just good one off performers in friendly games. I hope he justifies his call up though.

  4. mukmin says:

Good call up he plays in a more competitive league than Gyan and has more goals than Tagoe. I hope Gyan goes back to the epl at the end of his loan stint its in his best interest.

    • JNR says:

I hope so too but i doubt Gyan will come back to the English premier league because financially he gets everything in the UAE and they will like to retain him.
Besides he let the Sunderland fans down and i highly doubt they want him back there. He chose money over competition.

  5. Jesse says:

They should call most of these players so that at least we can seperate the boy’s from the men at the end of the day.If Klinsman was looking his side, the he should definately be a good striker.Acosty,Vandam,Wakasu,Sadick Adams,David Addy,Yartey,Yiadom Boakye all of them in the diaspora. Its a friendly and we can play all of them so that at the end of the day if you fail to live up to expectation, you will know your stand. There will be no more unecessary propaganda for you.

  6. Rattustherat says:

He is a full Ghanaian, born and schooled here. We have the right to try him out and see. At least he plays regularly for a major team, and not in Turkey or the middle east!

From his record, it looks like he is not a prolific goalscorer but would rather support the attack. This could mean that we still need to find a finisher or goalscorer for Dominic Oduro to work with, maybe Jordan Ayew could do that.

    • Sam says:

My brother donot compare us league to the Turkey and UAE, a league that the highest paid player makes 500,000 a year, and the lowest makes 30,000 u comparing with the Turkey league. This guy is not all that good. Ive said it here b4, he is playing against in experienced players. Is not a good call up as u all saying. but this is just a friendly game so lets see what he can do.

  7. Adangabe says:

Age 27.how long can he play competitive football?

    • Kwame says:

Yes he is 27 and using his real age, he was my mate at legon and played for my hall team Sarbah before he trasfered to his US university during our second year at legon. He went with one other guy called Ebo, and these guys made our hall and school team thick during 2002 and 2003. I remember our hall beating Kotoko with Meddendop as their coach one nill as part of our hall week celebration. If Laryea Kingston who claims to be 30yrs today 2012(he played in the league in 1995) can play for black stars, then Ananse can play for the black stars for the next ten years

  8. pee says:

can someone provide the full list of invitees….Ah!

  9. Toxicoly says:

Wondering about this call up.is it because the match is in the US.Will he have ben called if the match was in kuwait.lol
Sometimes i think some players are called up when the friendly match is in the country which they ply their trade.hmmmmm

  10. Akostic suyani says:

Okey is good, lets wait n see what he can do.

  11. Daddy k says:

All u guys who commented b4 r just stupid.where is the full list..GSN is just makin propaganda for him..Fuck GSN and all of u.stupid pple.if he is on the list where is his comments on the call up and the GFA comments too…Dick sucking pussy licking GSN

  12. Mashood says:

Why can’t GNS provid us the list. Appooooh websit

  13. Joe. says:

YEEEEE How I wish this guy proove his worth?. So that those players who feel they can resign and come back at any time re-think that Ghana is gigger than them.

  14. seidu says:

very good!!!! we should get more strikers than for us to depend on Gyan all the time

  15. sniper says:

Eiiii now kwaku Ananse go be wanna striker. Great guy. From Ananse to Speedster in soccer. Ghana Nani.

  16. Chu says:

The problem with us would be that if this potential flops in his first test, he is lost forever

  17. Samuel tei says:

Is a good call up n we need 2 call the likes of yeardom, baffour, mahatma n day can solve our scoring prblm

  18. Sabato says:

Its been long overdue. Striker papapaaaaa! No size.

  19. Boss says:

Glory be to God for Oduro’s call up.

  20. keith from germany says:

hahahaaah u guys very funny.this is not kweku ananse.i kno ananse very well.we use to live at mccarthy hill/new gbawe.
ananse is a very good friend of my broter.bro fred kyeremeh this is definately not anase.
ananse is just a hobby kicker.we are played football with baffour gyan, asamoah gyan, razak pimpong, abdul razak at new gbawe wembley park.
i repeat tis is hundred percent not ananse cuz i mpersonaly know te by the fire side ananse.i can bet my euros on that.i hope u guys take my point of correction in good faith

    • bremansu says:

  21. keith from germany says:

pls go to wikipedia n read about him n u will find no by the fire side story about im.HE IS NOT KWEKU ANANSE.

  22. Joe ziggy says:

How can he 27 years when he was at Legon in 2002.He is older than that.

  23. mate says:

He is kweku ananse I remember him very well. He is definately the legendary kweku ananse.

  24. Sam says:

Thats not Annanse. U guys are funny.

  25. kwasi says:

Why the coach is calling for Oduro now?. He is off age, he is 27 old not 20 old. Where is that policy?. “We were the youngers team”. Now it is a time to stop that nonsense, that stupid policy introduced by Abedi Pele. Now stop imposing that stupid policy on the coach. Let the coach call for anybody if the coach believe that, that person has something to offer whether the player is 10 years old or 99 years old of age.

  26. pofka says:

@keith pls check oduro’s wiki…and stop lamenting on unnecessary stuff…

  27. pofka says:

    Personal life
Oduro’s first feature on TV was
surprisingly as a child actor. On
    the Ghana Television
    programme by the fire side,
    Oduro regularly played the role
    of Okontompo Kwaku Ananse
    (The Cunning Spider) in tales
    narrated by the story telling
    duo Grace Omaboe and Nana
    Twum Barima who co-hosted
    the programme. An alumnus of
    Prempeh College and the
    University of Ghana, Oduro’s
career in the US started when
    he enrolled at Virginia
    Commonwealth University
    .
    Career statistics…THATS A COPY FROM WIKIPEDIA…

  28. andy says:

so u had him in mind and u waited dat long. goaat!!!!

  29. Maxwell Johnson says:

GSN where is the list? At least those living in the states will be very happy with Oduro’s call up, now lets see what he can do.

  30. Jesnoint Prince Gloric Aidoo says:

So gfa want to tell us that our local players are not good.mmmmmmmmmm shame unto ghana football. Association.

  32. kOBOO says:

Let us try dede ayew at the the number 9 striking position. anthony yeboah did very well at that position.

  33. bremansu says:
