Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka says the referee erred in sending off Albert Adomah in Saturday’s match against Charlton Athletic.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup player was booked for the second time in the match at the Valley on 82 minutes.

Adomah had already been yellow-carded on 75 minutes but Karanka remains adamant the Ghana international did not deserve to be sent off.

“The linesman was closer than me to the first incident, so I can’t say too much about that, but the decision involving Albert is difficult for me to understand,” Karanka said in a post-match interview.

“The referee was two or three meters away and gave the foul to us. Then five or six seconds later the linesman tells him it is the opposite way and is a red card. The referee is closer to the incident and I can’t understand this. The fourth official told me that the referee had made a mistake and changed his mind.

“Everyone can make mistakes, I am the first one who can make mistakes, but when the referee is closer than the linesman and then changes his mind, this I can’t understand.”
