Medeama midfielder Michael Helegbe has blamed the side’s 2-0 defeat to AC Leopards in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup tie to poor refereeing but believes the side can turn things around.

The Yellow and Mauves have it all to do in overturning a 2-0 deficit when they host the Congolese side in the return encounter in order to qualify for the group stage of the competition.

Three penalty kicks were awarded against the Tarkwa-based side while suffering a sending off in the first leg clash far away in Congo.

Leopards could however only convert two of the penalty kicks to take the first leg advantage.

Medeama playmaker Michael Helege is however confident his team can turn things around in the return fixture despite lamenting the poor performance of the referee.

“We play well but the ref frustrated us by giving them three penalties,” he told GHANAsoccernet.com.

“But all is in the past now. We are now focusing on the return leg to change the deficit and qualify to the group stage.”

Medeama are only making their first appearance in Africa this season.

They are the only surviving Ghanaian club in African club competition following the early exits of Asante Kotoko and Berekum Chelsea in the Champions League and Ebusua Dwarfs in the Confederations Cup.
