Michael Essien took a pay cut to join Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has revealed midfielder Michael Essien took a pay cut to move from Chelsea to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

The Ghanaian midfielder is currently on a season-long loan at the Spanish club, but his former boss at Stamford Bridge has revealed Essien wanted the deal so much he took a drop in wages to make sure it happened.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper AS, Mourinho revealed the 29-year-old’s decision to accept lower pay, which suggests Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was unwilling to subsidise any of his wages, as Manchester City have often done.

Essien made the move late on the last day of the summer transfer window and it came as a surprise to many, as he was only just beginning to play regularly following recovery from two long-term injuries.

However, he was no longer a first choice in the starting XI under Roberto di Matteo last season, with many commenters believing injuries had greatly reduced the powers of a player whom had been integral to the teams’ success under Mourinho.

Essien has a famously good relationship with the Portuguese and that could possibly lead to a permanent move come the summer, though there have been no reports of an agreement between Chelsea and Real.

whoever wrote this article is fool. When did any paper mention that Essien wanted the deal so much,he took a pay cut.
When you deduct the top rate tax Essien pay in the UK and national insurance and compare the tax rate in Spain,Essien earn more.
The tax system in the uk is killing.

Dnt mind dem dey needs 2 catch d attention of pple so by dat dey write false stories,d writer’s name is mark clatenberg junior

  3. Thegreatest says:

What is your level of economics. Essien took a pay cut on his gross. You are comparing gross salary to net by bringing in taxes

    • zambians are pigs says:

@thegreatest-you are the greatest fool, are you blind, daft or plain greatest stupid.I am maKING A POINT THAT whether pay cut or not,Essien earns more playing for Madrid.
The writer said Essien WANTED the deal ”SO MUCH”,he took a pay cut.He did not take a pay cut because he wanted the deal sooo much.

  4. pablo says:

What essien need now is a middle class team to marshal its midfield not a top european team. It is clear essien is past his prime though he shows glimpse of his old self sometimes. He is not needed at madrid that much otherwise he would be playing somewhere in The middle not as an improvised left back, he can never show his best there, should seriously weigh his options in next year

  5. nana(rsa) says:

@thegreat, l beg to differ with you. Gross pay minus deductions which tax is part of, will give you the net pay. So what is your point? Besides, where in Economics did you see payroll analysis? Essien played very well yesterday. If only Ronaldo can do a little bit of defending, that position will be monopolised by him.

  6. fanta says:

Essien is a big man, playing along side Christian Ronaldo and other top players,at least he got something to say when he retire

  7. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

REAL MADRID HAS A BETTER CHANCE WINNING THE CHAMPS LEAGUE THAN CHELSEA. I CAME ON HERE AND SUGGESTED ESSIEN GO TO REAL MADRID. UNLIKE MANY OF HIS COMPATRIOTS, ESSIEN, WITH 2 CAREER ENDING KNEE SURGERIES IS PROVING TO THE WORLD THAT HE CAN STILL PLAY TOP LEVEL SOCCER WITH THE BEST OF THEM. MURINHO SHOULD PUT PEPE ON THE LEFT AND ESSIEN IN CENTERBACK OR MIDFIELD

    • Asem says:

l do remember you wrote on this real madrid thing before it came to pass!!you really wanted Ess to move away to madrid!!!what were your taughts for hampering on Ess moving to madrid way before the deal was clinched??

  8. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

just to see HIM PLAY AND GET BACK IN FORM, SO HE COULD BE INVITED TO GHBSTAR. DATS ALL. SO FAR HE HAS PERFORMED WELL, BUT HE COULD DO BETTER. AA SHOULD ALSO CALL HIM FOR AFCON 2013. ANYONE CAN BE INJURED AT ANYTIME. WE NEED ESSIEN’S EXPERIENCE. GYAN, ABEYIE, ESIEN N RAHIM AYEW CAN HELP US

  9. nana armah says:

    essien is great
