Ghana midfielder Michael Essien proved his worth with glistening 90 minutes treat in Chelsea’s slender 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho restored his confidence in the 31-year-old and picked him ahead of Nigerian midfielder John Mikel Obi in central midfield and he glittered throughout the entire duration of the game.

Though manager Jose Mourinho defended him after an uninspiring first-half performance against Southampton in early December, many ruled out the probability of Mourinho fielding the Ghanaian.

But he was restored to his favourite position on the field – central midfield Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon in a must-win tie for Chelsea who recorded a slender 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace.

A glimmer of Essien’s raw physique was seen when he crashed a Palace midfielder leading to booking from the center referee.

Spanish international Fernando Torres and Brazilian Ramirez got the goals for Chelsea with Moroccan Maroune Chamakh scoring the consolation for the visitors.

Chelsea manager Mourinho has confirmed he will add Essien to his Uefa Champions League squad for the next round of the competition after initially omitting him from his list for the group stages.

Thats good of you dada, Monkey no fine but eh father like am, keep on Essien, world cup is waiting for u

  2. Agyayaw says:

Thanks bro, i’m happy 4 u… U are still on point!!

  3. anokwale says:

I was watching him carefully and my assessment is that he is much too slow. He is intelligent with the ball. He releases passes at the right time to the right person but I would not call him a dynamic player.

  4. JOE says:

He did well ba i fynk diz not de Essien we know. our man is gradually loosn his confidence, even de goal waz scored tru hiz possition. Anyway im hapi ‘ him.

  5. iantwii says:

Of course, he is a step or two slower. This was very evident in the Ghana, Egypt match in Cairo. However, his experience and knowledge of the game is invaluable to the collective course of the Black Stars.

  6. Tanko says:

Folks: Essien was not slow but cautious! He’s still got it and can compete elsewhere…..

  7. Speed says:

    MY BLACK STARS 11

    Kwarasey

    Afful. Boye. Vorsah. Opare

    Rabiu. Essien

    K.P.B. Kwadwo. Ayew

    Gyan

SUBS: Waris, Jordan, Badu, Muntari, Wakasu, Atsu

    • Askantwi says:

Get Jordan out of it. Adiyiah or yiadom is much better option.

    • Jaja says:

Seriously you’re benching Muntari, our most in form AC Milan player?? Word up, Kofi. Why is he always overlooked? Also in 2010 they didn’t play him cause he was ‘too old’, after that he’s been playing 3 years as a regular in AC Milan now. People should think again, cause Muntari is amazing. Very unpredictable for the opposition, has a killer vision and always somehow gets to score.

  8. Assemblyman says:

Yes,I will also think he was real cautious.Especially learning lessons from his injury history. He wasnt that combative as we know of him.The most important thing,Chelsea carried the 3 points at stake on the day.Go Chelsea!

  9. Kwabena says:

He was gud but needs more playing time

  10. kay says:

though i couldnt watch all the 90 mins, with the about 40mins i watched in the 2nd half, i think he did well with his passes and general play.

  11. Kofi(Atlanta) says:

Speed, i like your selection, but will replaced Opare with a natural left footed and replace Rabiu with Muntari. I dont understand why we still underate Muntari. Such a dominant player regularly playing for a team like Milan, is time we recognise his wealth.
Rabiu is ok but Muntari has the experience, can shoot well and can also give long-deadly pass.

  12. Abus says:

It s simple, put both afful and opare in each others place. Maintain much tackling and energetic rabiu. And u could use muntari for essien

  13. Speed says:

Chilax guys, I made mention that its MY BLACK STARS 11(Fantasy). I chose Rabiu n Essien bcos I think Essien has clever passes than Muntari. If I should pair them both in the middle, our opponents will run us over in the world stage bcos those two lack pace n are not energetic like before. So my combination was old skul+New skul. I placed Opare @ left back because I think he performs there better than right back. Afful is comfortable at both right n left. We should remember we are going to face world class opponents who need to be clamped down before they cause harm. Muntari surely is class no doubt but I just think Essien @ Natural 8 position will deliver killer passes to strikers than Muntari. (That’s my opinion)

  14. Appiah says:

I think he was generally slow,he losses possession,i don’t think he would have been chosen if not that Mikel was injured in training.thats what commentator said

  15. Kweku says:

ei Ghanaians worry themselves too much somebody is sitting behind his pentium 4 making his own selections and pple r here worried abt it….

  16. FABU THE BEST & GREATEST says:

Essien in his worst form is better than Mikel in his best form.

  17. Made in Naija says:

I wonder why Ghanaians hate Mikel so badly. Even this crap journalist can’t write without mentioning his name. He even showed his incompetence and ignorance by saying that Essien was picked ahead of Mikel in the central midfield[repeated twice]. I wonder if that’s where Mikel plays. Mumu! Keep hating Mikel while he makes money and you become poorest. For ur info, Mikel is a great friend of Essien. Even Kenneth “Nesta” Omeruo goes to Essien’s house and is being received well by Essien and his wife. I recall it was you who said Essien was going to bench Mikel at Chelsea under Mourinho. Hope u r eating ur words now? Local man causing enmity b/w Ghana nd Naija. 1luv 2 both Naija/GH!
