Philemon McCarthy Black Stars recall has thrilled many local fans

By Patrick Akoto

Hearts of Oak goalkeepers’ trainer Abubakar Damba has hailed the recall of Philemon McCarthy to the Black Stars.

The 28-year-old had consistently been overlooked for a place in the national team despite impressing  in post for Hearts over the past three years.

But the former Feyernood shot-stopper finally got his breakthrough after a two-year absence after he was named in a 21-man squad released by coach Kwesi Appiah ahead of the  the return fixture of the 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Malawi on October 13.

The former Ghana goalkeeper who has long been angling for the player’s recall into the team is delighted with the turn of event.

“I am thrilled with his (McCarthy’s) recall into the Black Stars. It is long overdue because he is in top shape,” Damba told Accra-based Happy FM

“I have always insisted that I have the best crop of goalkeepers in the country and I will implore the handlers to call more of them.

“It is now up to him to step up his game and show his capabilities.”

McCarthy is regarded by many as a competent first choice goalie for the national team and must fight to dislodge Adam Kwarasey.

  5. GH FUO, THINK BIG!!! says:

NOTHING AGAINST MCCARTHY. IF HE IS THE BEST CURRENTLY, HE MUST BE WITH GBSTAR. HOWEVER, ISNT SAMMY ADJEI THE BEST LOCAL GOALIE RIGHT NOW? WHY WAS MCCARTHY CHOSEN OVER SAMMY ADJEI….?

  6. crusader7 says:

The refusal to call up Sammy Adjei is just a puzzle. That goes also for Amoako of Kotoko.

  7. phrank kente says:

are you sure that MacCarthy is in shape to lead the Black Star?cos he has not been in post since the injury he picked in the match FABU defeated HATS so how come he is called to the Blackstars team then OLELE also need a call up cos he too has been training on his own and even what about Isaac Amoako who is always in post for Kotoko.AA cast your net wide ok… but still All the best….
