Andre Ayew returned to action for Marseille in their 4-3 defeat to Sampdoria in a pre-season friendly on Saturday after overcoming a groin injury.

The midfielder picked up the injury early last week and missed the friendly against Italian side Parma.

But he showed progress at training on Friday and convinced head coach Elie Baup about his improved fitness level.

The 23-year-old is now fit for Marseille's Ligue 1 opener against Guingamp next Sunday.

Ayew made 35 appearances for the Ligue 1 side last season, scoring nine goals.

He was pivotal in Marseille finishing second in the French Ligue 1 behind rivals Paris Saint-Germain.
