Louis van Gaal and his Manchester United players took time out from their preparations for Sunday’s trip to face Everton by meeting a group of fans at the club’s Foundation Dream Day, with one even detailing the players he would like the Dutchman to sign this summer.

The supporters, who suffer from life-limiting illnesses, visited the club’s training ground at Carrington to watch the squad train, before meeting their United heroes, including David de Gea, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata. But the star of the show was the fan who urged Van Gaal to take a look at his list of transfer targets, complete with how much it may cost to land them this summer.

“Hummels, Clyne, Pogba, Bale, Depay, Jackson Martínez? Thank you for this, I’ll bear it in mind. You are smart,” said the Dutchman when presented with the list.

“He didn’t tell me who I have to sell but after a little bit of pushing, I know. Next year we are the champions.”

Wayne Rooney added: “For us as players to come here and see the smiles on their faces is a great feeling to bring some excitement to them.”

One young fan also ribbed the Belgium midfielder Marouane Fellaini by asking whether his famous Afro hairstyle was all his.

“Is your hair real or is it a wig?” he asked. “Yes, it’s real,” said Fellaini.
