Mali coach Giresse eyes Ghana scalp to seal second round place

Posted On Thursday, 26th January 2012

Mali coach Alain Giresse says he wants to beat Ghana on Sunday to make sure their place in the second round is secured before the final round of matches in Group D of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

Giresse’s side come up against joint-toppers Ghana in Saturday’s clash at the Stade de Franceville.

But ahead of the game, the Frenchman says he wants to secure a win against Ghana before tackling the final group game Botswana next week.

“Ghana is a very strong team and will be a big mistake to underestimate them. They have quality players and our aim will be to get all three points from them,” Giresse said at his team’s base in Bongoville.

“For us, our mind is set on going all the way which means getting every point. Though Ghana will be very tough, our focus is enough motivation going into the game.”

Giresse adds: “There are no underdogs in the group knowing how Botswana played against Ghana.

“For that reason, we will like to get all the points even before our last game since it will make things easy for our progress.”

This arrogance at it max!”Ghana is a very strong team and will be a big mistake to underestimate them”. Can somebody tell me since when Mali is favorite to a point to underestimate us?

    • dr edusei chicago says:

you are right amy. this is stuoid talk from the mali coach. ghana will beat mali hands down. ghana will play better this time. few changes need to be made in the line up. derek boateng, kojo asamoah and jonathan mensah should start in place of jr ayew, john mensah and maybe annan.
also, inkoom should be at right back, paintsil to the bench and our natural left back to that position.

    • Papa Nkrumah says:

Ironically, it might just be what we need to perform. Just imagine the players hearing this statement from the Malian camp (and I know that Ibrahim Sannie who is a director of GSN will carry the message to them). Mali will open the game and regret it

    • Truthisbitter says:

Even Manchester United,Manchester City,Barcelona,Real Madrid, and so many other big team football clubs lose at their own home……..so what makes Ghana unbeatable hehn…….its so sad that when others express their opinions on how they see things…..they get insulted because the comments doesn’t support Ghana…….a Ghanaian has the rights to support any country he choses to support even against his own…….games against countries you have played and beaten before on so many occasions are even more difficult than the countries you have not played with yet……because the players have their pride and ego as players playing for their countries to protect too……and as for fans….o dont go there……some are extremists loyalists

  2. Paddy says:

If soccer is played with mouth South Africa or Nigeria would have won the World Cup for five times.
He will change his statement after the match.

  3. REALITY says:

He is trying to put his players in a tight corner,I don’t think Kaita and his mates will be happy about this comments. He is starting what can’t finish.Insha-Allah we shall crash them. You can sense that he is already taking us for granted because of the absence of our defensive wall.He will be surprised to see something different.

  4. A cool guy says:

How come the Mali coach could run his mouth like that. Apparently, he is putting pressure on himself and the entire team. He has therefore put on the favourite tag which is good for the Black Stars because will even serve as a motivation to the Stars.

  5. chief justice says:

mouths do not win matches.tell giresse to shut or he will collapse after 9pm on saturday.Ghana is ghana ooooo. No BAGGA WIRE.

  6. Chu says:

  8. sumanguru kante says:

it is only an idiot who will think that the mali coach will say ghana wil beat his team.end of story.

  9. Nii Kwatei says:

Let them beat us on Sunday. In the mean time we will beat them on Saturday, when the actual game is played.

  10. EMMANUEL KENNEDY-SMITH says:
