The wife of Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu has been killed in a car crash in which he was also hurt.

Maria Inglis was travelling with her husband from Blantyre to Lilongwe to watch the semifinal match of the Standard Bank Cup involving Bullets FC and Mighty Wanderers when their vehicle crushed near Phalula in Balaka.

Police spokesman in the area, Titani Chadwala, said Nyamirandu lost control of the car as he passed with another vehicle .

“The car overturned three times,” Chadwala said.

Nyasa Times has established that four others including Nyamilandu were receiving treatment at a hospital.

Mrs Nyamilandu was pronounced dead upon arrival at Bakaka District Hospital.

The FAM president was admitted to Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre where he was receiving treatment for the injuries he sustained in the accident.

His son Allansten was also seriously injured and is receiving treatment at the hospital.

FAM CEO Suzgo Nyirenda confirmed to Nyasa Times in an interview that Nyamilandu was “stable”, adding that doctors would give further details in due course.

Nyamilandu late last year lost his former wife Rehana Surtee Manda, one of the pioneers of Television Malawi

Rehana and Walter had two children together who were under the mothering of Maria.

Meanwhile, another female passenger, Effie Kadzakumanja, who suffered serious injuries in the accident, died on Saturday in hospital in Blantyre.

Thanx should go to Ghanaian football followers for showing their human heart in joing us to condole our FAM president. The antagonistic talk about our teams should not seperate us in sharing grief, for in God we are one.We talk about our teams just to show pride and patriotism otherwise we are African brothers. The Ghanaian team will enjoy our first class hospitality at a top hotel in our capital and will feel at home in the “Warm Heart of Africa”.
