Ghana FA Executive Committee member Randy Abbey has warned that a defeat to USA in the opening game at the 2014 World Cup will spell doom for the Black Stars.

Ghana is making its third successive appearance at the World Cup finals to be hosted by Brazil.

The Black Stars will kick off its campaign against America – a side Ghana has beaten twice in previous campaigns – on June 16 in Natal.

Ghana will then follow up with tough games against Germany and Portugal in Group G.

Many pundits believe three points off the board against USA is non-negotiable if the ambition of at least a semi final finish is to be achieved.

And the Ex.Co member agrees the result from the opening match against USA will to a large extent determine Ghana’s progress in Brazil.

“The key to our progress in the World Cup is the first game [against USA],” he told GHANAsoccernet.com.

“I think that the first game against USA is key and will go a long way to determine whether we will progress or not.

“I don’t hope for us to lose that game. It is a game we must win and I am positive minded we will win it.

“We need to win our first game, it is crucial. When we win that game it takes a lot of nerves off.

“It ensures we are a bit more relaxed and it motivates us to go out there and get good results in the other two games.”

Ghana were quarter finalists at the last World Cup in South Africa having made in impressive debut in the finals four years earlier in Germany.

The current team under the direction of coach Kwesi Appiah hold the ambition of making it to the semi finals of the upcoming edition in Brazil.

There is no way USA can beat us ,they have been a faithful wife to us and we appreciate their humbleness and dedication to the marriage ,any day any time ghana will emerge victorious against USA …

Football is not basketball excuse my language

And we will all see who will eat his Apple Pie on June 16th if you HIPC Poor nation of less than 30 Million think you can defeat a Jurgen Klinsmann team then you guys are in for HUGE HUGE disappointment. We live to See

      • Ogya says:

And who is USA? a 300milion plus country that plays football with its hands instead of legs? Learn to play with your legs before you can think of defeating a juggernaut football nation of a measly population of 20m+ that has defeated or eliminated you twice from the World cup

As for Klinsman, he just wants to be paid. He cannot turn sisi’s into men. I think he is over his head with this team

Randy, your wishes will come true Inshallah

  3. Africanus says:

@21 I like to share in your optimism, but we must also ensure that we are not complacent. We should expect a very tough opening match. The US will not want to be beaten three times in a row by Ghana and will come out fighting with every thing they have. We can’t and should not get this wrong by making any unfounded assumptions. Beating them twice in the past does not guarantee a third win. We’ll have to fight for a win if we want it.

    • 21guns says:

You are right ,but what I like about this World Cup is we are the underdogs judging from the FIFA ranking and I have not seen any underdog with a complency this will even help us to do well against those who are rate above us.

And I know the fighting spirit of the black stars ,or we need is to play for no injury.

  4. Benito says:

How we beat them when we have underestimated them by going to camp in LA,their team home base.that must change,it doesn’t make sense to me at all.

  5. anokwale says:

Yes it is a critical match. However, we should not go in thinking that if things go wrong it is over. Germans and Portuguese are human as well. They can be beaten.

  6. alomo says:

Ghana has never been ranked higher at any time it played USMNT in any of the Worldcups- the same is true for the up coming world cup. (Fifa rankings has its limitations, flaws etc)

LA is not the home of USMNT. USMNT has no home stadium- it plays matches based on its opponents’ profile.

e.g. USA will never play Mexico (or any hispanic/latino national team) in California, Texas, Florida, or in a state with a pro latino crowd in non-tournament (one venue tournament), competitive fixture.

The Soccer Federation in the USA is 100% independent of the government.

    • Wuatoto MaddDogg says:

Dude STFU wha’ do you know ma beloved USMNT is scheduled to play a friendly with Mexico in Phoenix,TX and the USMNT has home base @ Stub Hub Center in Los Angeles where Jurgen Klinsmann lives where i also live so let your HIPC poor Black Stars come to camp in Los Angeles and we’ll see how i will scout for Jurgen

  7. EA1us says:

@ 21guns, don’t get ahead of yourself bro, U.S has a great team and a good coach right now. Mighty black stars will have their hands full, I promise you. Black stars have to bring their best performance to win the game or we’ll lose.

  8. EA1us says:

We won the GOLD cup several months ago while beating Mexico 2:0… we beat spain 3:2 a year right after they won the world cup. It’s not a cake walk folks, Black stars have to be well prepared for this game. We’ve knocked out Portugal before…. during the 2002 world cup and not afraid of them including their CR7. The RED, WHITE and BLUE are serious this time and can’t be pushed around.

  9. EA1us says:

@ 21guns, even though we’ve beaten U.S twice but both wins weren’t handy. 2006 wc… we needed a penalty for a narrow 2:1 win, 2010 wc… we needed extra time as well for the 2:1 defeat, it hasn’t been easy with U.S at all bro.

  10. Ghanaman says:

USA is not a footballing nation,we’ll teach ‘em another lesson.

    • kkknj says:

Randy, the USA team also knows that if they loose to us they are out, so what are you going to do.This game here is not going to be easy.It will be the hardest than playing the Germans and the Ronaldos.

  11. EA1us says:

Guys, don’t take this punk [ wuatoto madCow] as an american, he’s a nigerian thief hating on the mighty black stars.
