Liverpool legend John Barnes admits the performance of the Black Stars at the just ended World Cup finals in Brazil fell below his expectation.

The Black Stars lost 2-1 to USA in their Group G opener but drew 2-2 in the second game with eventual winners Germany to keep their hopes of progression alive only to bow out after a 2-1 defeat to Portugal.

Ghana failed to better the quarter-final feat chalked four years ago in South Africa.

Barnes believes Black Stars had the potential of reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.

“The Black Stars for me could have done much better than they did,” he told GHANASoccernet.com.

“There are a lot of reasons that Greece did well and it was that they were always at the right place at the right time.

“ For me in short I really expected more from a team that had represented Africa well in the last two world cups.”
