Le Roy still rates Ghana as AFCON favourite

Posted On Monday, 21st January 2013

Claude Le Roy

DR Congo coach Claude Le Roy insists Ghana are still favourites to win the 2013 Nations Cup despite holding them to a 2-2 draw on Sunday.

The Black Stars threw away a two-goal lead to share the spoils with the Leopards in the opening Group B fixture in Port Elizabeth.

The four-time African champions missed a unique opportunity to make a strong statement of intent following.

But Le Roy, who steered Ghana to a third place finish at the 2008 Nations Cup on home soil, is adamant the Black Stars alongside Ivory Coast are the teams to beat at the tournament.

“”They convinced me. Ghana and Ivory Coast are both good and that is the reason for today’s 2-2 draw,” Le Roy told MTNFootball.com

“Ghana you know is the best team of Africa with Ivory Coast.”

  1. Congoman says:

Just be honest Leroy and tell them that they were simply lucky to get away with a draw. Don’t get me wrong Ghana is always good but the Leopars showed to Africans who is better on pitch??.Anyway good luck to BS just remember to respect the Leopards and keep off their path.
Cause the BS won’t be so lucky the next time around.

  2. kuuku philly says:

Now the congoleese r making noise…

  3. Troy says:

Congo Man It was rather your Congo Team that was Lucky one to get the draw. If not for silly mistake from our defenders u wouldn’t have had that (PG) so shut up. When Ghana is even missing a bunch of key players your congo team can’t even beat they had to struggle to draw with us.

  4. kwame pito says:

IF WE LOOSE AGAINST MALI GUESS WHAT WE ARE OUTTTTTT! we need AT LEAST another draw.
Start Afful at RIGHT BACK not Pantsil.
    Move KASA to LEFT-MIDFIELD.
    start ANNAN not Derek.

  5. pike says:

Afful is a waste…he does not even create any chances..can’t even take one or two players upfront..I think we don’t have any player to take the position and that is a very big worry..
we just hope for the best in our next game..

  6. May his peace prevails says:

Ghana and Mali will go through the group stage and Ghana will win the cup eventually!

  7. yopoo says:

The man is playing the mind game here he Ghana to be complacent and we will realize we are out.

  8. Blakroze GH says:

Congoman, you are soo ignorant that it’s actually beginning to sound funny, your coach and players are thanking God that they drew with Ghana just jubilating all round, whilst Ghanaians are crying that we just showed our worst performance and you, an insignificant fool, is here on our site telling us that you’ve proved to the world that you are better than us….seriously? The world has rather seen Ghana as the best team who can win this AFCON, and guess what? Your coach is even predicting a GHANA/IVORY COAST final….your own coach does not see you in the finals, and don’t give me that crap that it’s mind games cos it was clear for the whole world to see that we scored you 2 goals 1st, if you were better why didn’t you score us 1st? A better side that jubilates when they draw with a small team like Ghana(according to you) look here man, if it’s respect you want, you got it cos we respect every team in the world unlike you who doesn’t but know that you are NOT better than GHANA!!!

  9. Phemostiga says:

As a nigeria am very dissapointed with ghana cuz i expect them to beat congo but congo realy outplay ghana.if ghana want to come top of this group i think they need to up there game else they wont come out of this group.
As 4 nigeria match 2day am nt expectin a win,i think will gon draw

  10. Blakroze GH says:

@Phemostiga we are equally disappointed but not entirely, cos we know for a fact that the BS are slow starters, this is our worst performance so it’sa quiet good in a certain way too.

  11. Fiifi says:

Ghanaians have started again with complacency! Please note: DrCongo has always been a thorn in the flesh of Ghana! Like Zambia, they have more wins over the Black Stars!!! In these tournaments, you need a clever coach with clear tactical strategy and structures to get you to the finals.Ghana has always boasted of top midfielders, but what we have at the moment at South Africa, is simply inadequate and to a great extent not fit or simply tired (from what ? – the technical team knows the cause of this but has refused to tackle it- or are just clueless). The midfield was left to congolese to do their own thing, players were more occupied with their future at club level than with what was going on on the field of play!!!This is wfere that “tactical indiscipline” cropped in!!!Don’t let us be decieved with the number of “missed chances”, these don’t count, rather go for GOAL NA MA FIF3!!! THAT IS TACTICAL DISCIPLINE!!!

  12. kayblaze says:

i beleive, our right side is the weakest link, both adomah n panstil’s side needs to be lookd at

  13. AFCON CHAMP says:

Favorite on paper not on the pitch, I blame those who rate you as favorites when you dont even know the last time u won that cup… 1982?? My foot, just cheer Zambia today….

  14. Riquelme says:

@troy. Who are d bunch of players u ‘re missing? Kpb has retired from ur team, essien is a shadow of himself, muntary can not play 2 games consecutively without getting injured simply becoz of age faking.. D only player u guyz are missing is andre ayew.

  15. Riquelme says:

@blackroze Gh. Ooh u believe in d words of some dude dat named u as afcon favourites with dis shambolic performances? C’mon football is not played on d pages of news dailys.

  16. Blakroze GH says:

    @Riquelme…”we are equally
disappointed but not entirely, cos we know for a fact that the BS are slow starters, this is our worst
performance…” Please I clearly stated that here in Ghana, we are not happy with our performance, we consider it a failure and that’s what makes us the best cos congo see this draw as their success, and anyway, he isn’t the 1st one to predict it so why do you say I take his word? Like I said, I’m glad our players are not perturbed by comments like yours and congoman cos if you thought before you commented you wouldn’t have said this..”u believe in d words of some dude dat named u as afcon favourites with dis shambolic performances?” When you can clearly see that we are disappointed and in our shambolic performances, pundits still tip us to win the cup…..simply put, congo is happy with the draw, we are devastated so there’s no need for that comment. Anyway, if you belief zambia, congo or any other team can win it apart from Ghana, why are you even rubbing it in our faces here on our forum? It will be best if you personally went to SA and discourage our player’s ,whilst at it you can also go to super sport and put the pundits in their place. Ciao

  17. selfmade says:

@ fiifi- masa,u lying ok…. why did u learnt that dr Congo has more wins over Ghana!! Where!!! For your information,Ghana has won more than Congo. I know u can use the Google search engineer and enlighten and educate yourself….. viva the revolutionciooooool

  18. selfmade says:

@ fiifi- Ghana and congo has met 14 times, with Ghana win 8 times,Congo 4 times with two ending in a draw…. yesterday makes it 15 times and Ghana has won heavily so mister, congo not be our size and is not even Ghana bogey side!!! We were on our way to victory called total madness set in,given two solid goals away on a silver platter!!! Viva the revolutionciiiooooooooooo!!!!

  19. Blakroze GH says:

Some shitty african champs we got, *10 man ethiopia ,renard in his WHITE SHIRT, sunzu in the team and according to them SA is their home….the stage was set for a full victory, here is even a comment from one fan called afcon champ”My foot, just cheer Zambia
today….” Now what did we witness guys? Zambia being outplayed even though they outnumbered Ethiopia(their whipping boys) the game ending in a draw whilst they were badly beaten, I mean MAN HANDLED by their whipping boys,AND THEY HAVE THE NERVE TO SAY GHANA PLAYED shit yesterday….I must confess I’ve lost all respect for the zambians who comment here…..you’ll always be minnows cos you can’t stand the pressure of champs.

  20. Zambia is out toilet hole says:

WHERE ARE THE STUPID ZAMBIANS WHO KEPT MAKING NOISE HERE?HAVE THEY SEEN HOW ONLY TEN MEN ETIOPIANS SWINDLED THEM TODAY?THIS TEAM MAKING PROUD BEING CHAMPIONS?MY FOOT.THEY ARE YET TO MEET NIGERIA AND THE NEXT THEY ARE SHOWN THE EXIT.
