Kwesi Appiah's move to bring back Milovan Rajevac is 'backward' - renowned South African journalist Mark Gleeson

Milovan Rajevac could be returning to the Black Stars fold

Renowned football commentator Mark Gleeson has described Kwesi Appiah’s move to rope in Milovan Rajevac as a member of his backroom staff for the 2014 World Cup as ‘backward’ which has far-reaching consequences for coaches in Africa.

Appiah has contacted the Serbian tactician who led the Black Stars to a quarter final finish at the last World Cup in South Africa over a role in his backroom staff for June’s tournament in Brazil.

Some including influential members of the Ghana FA appear to be hugely in favour of the coach’s move to return his former boss to the Black Stars set up.

Others are however expressed fury at Appiah’s latest move meant to improve his technical team for the World Cup.

Critics are quick to point the way the 60-year-old left the Ghana job in 2010 for a more lucrative job in Saudi Arabia and say he cannot be trusted.
Renowned South African journalist Mark Gleeson has waded into the debate by saying the Ghana coach’s move has the potential of killing the spirit of African coaches.

“I think this is a backward move by the Ghana coach. It sends the wrong signal about the quality of African coaches,” he said on SuperSport’s Soccer Africa show.

“Having presided over perhaps Ghana’s best campaign in the qualifiers and now turn around and bring in a foreign coach is a bad move.

“You can keep him [Rajevac] discretely in the stands or on the phone but not come out and say you want him as part of your delegation.”

Appiah has contacted three others with the possibility of making up his backroom staff for Ghana’s third successive World Cup appearance in Brazil.

The Black Stars are drawn in Group G where they will be facing Germany, USA and Portugal.

What do you make of Mark Gleeson’s comment on the move to return Milovan Rajevac to the Black Stars?

Is Kwesi Appiah doing the right thing by consulting Milovan Rajevac?

Is the Serbian still in tune with the modern game after three years without a job?

This was a very bad precedent by our coach but what even surprises me the most is the way the fa is supporting this move! Am also surprised people can call milo a tactician! Tactician where? A coach who packs the bus for 90 mins and hit the opponent on the counter is only good for coaching underdogs team because that’s the strategy employed by underdog teams! Ghana is now a big team and should move away from this tactics and try to open up tight defenses! There is no way milo with his counter attacking philosophy can help our cause in Brazil against discipline, well organized teams like Portugal, germany and USA! It won’t work.. Finally, a coach who couldn’t succeed with saudia Arabia and Qatar is no tactician because a good tactician can succeed with even average players and there are a lot of examples to cite!! Jose mourinhno helping Porto to win the champions league with low profile Porto team.. Mourinhno again winning the champions league with inter with low budget players and even RENARD WINNING THE AFCON WITH ZAMBIA WTH AVERAGE ZAMBIAN PLAYERS who incidentally annihilated Senegal, ghana n I. Coast full of quality players than zambian and this is what a tactician do!! Milo should not be entertain again!!

  3. b4world says:

wat is funny is everybody is reporting coach appiah requested the serbian, yet coach appiah haven’t said a word,so my question is,where is this coming from

    • spellBOUND says:

hahah, oh brother, please ask again. AA has made no announcement, and nyantakyi only spoke because journalists probably asked him what he thinks, and he said he will support any decisions made by AA. THATS ALLLL….. yet people are jumping off bridges based on unconfirmed rumors….. hahaha. after all, we all know how the ghanian media can concoct stories out of thin air…… yet, it has not stop our fellow forumites.

  4. Benny says:

It is not only backward ,it is timid and stupid. If AA needs help there are potential local coaches who can fill that gap.Bobo boldly led Ghana to win the under twenty World Cup.Milo is not any extraordinary coach.
Milo is not coming in with Ghana at heart. He is coming with his selfish interest. How long can we be treated as not worthy. If AA can’t do the job he should resign and let Bobo take over.

  5. selfmade says:

Appiah has not said a word because he dont like the move and is obviously the fa made this decisions for AA!!

  6. kwaku says:

Kwasi appiah has set back the clock of civilization 100 years.

  7. Ansong says:

THIS KUMASI COACH IS ACTING LIKE A KID BECAUSE HE DOESN’T HAVE UEAFA LICENSE ‘A’ 2) NO HEAD COACH EXPERIENCE 3) NEVER PLAYED PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL ABROAD 4) TACTICALLY BLIND, *wise up* WE NOW KNOW THE FULL LENGTH OF MR FROG.

  8. William Sorkpor, USA says:

Ghana is tired of the thankless job of carrying the whole Africa on its back.

We stupidly sacrifice our goodwill with the other races of the global community for Africa, only for you people to betray us.

What did we get from all the money we wasted on the pan-African movement?

Nothing, but scorn and rage of the advanced economies. Our people suffer, our country remains less than, — in the name of African pride –; while you people turn your backs on Africa and embrace Western pride.

What kind of suckers do you people take us for?

I challenge Africa to truthfully answer this question:

Who deserves better recognition, Nkrumah or
    Mandela?

We are tired of saddling the potential of our country, and its people; with the deadwoods of Africa.

    ENOUGH! ENOUGH! ENOUGH!(ASSEZ! ASSEZ! ASSEZ!).

May Lord Almighty continue to bless our beloved Great Ghana:
    Amen!!!

    • apiangalege says:

Williams Sorkpor, it seems to me that most Ghanaians are possesed with the spirit of self delusion, that swhy they find it easier to rant, brag and boast! How can someone who s not deluded ever compare Nkrumah with Mandela!Who s Nkrumah where the issue is Mandela….o boy stop this your childish rant, mon!

  9. Say that again. Kwasi Appiah has disappointed all his supporters. I regret routing for him. What a let down.

  10. boro says:

On the 6th of March it was reported by GSN that AA met with Milo at an unnamed location add AA is said to have made the offer of playing an advisory role to Milo. Why is AA not denying this? Silence they say sometimes means concerned, abi? He made the move and looking at the criticism coming he is afraid to come out because he knows that if he comes out to affirmed it he cannot stand the bashing. He is just keeping quiet so that it dies naturally. He knows this is a goof!

  11. kofi says:

South Africa has become like a younger brother to Ghana when it comes to soccer. As a result, I take Mark Gleeson’s criticism very serious.
The facts, however, are that AA has not have enough competition since becoming the lead coach. His first competition was the last African cup of nations which he did not impress.(in fact the Ghana CHAN team just beat the same Congo team that AA failed to beat in the African cups. His next competition was qualifying the Black Stars for the world cup which he did.
However, Ghanaians recognize the world cup is a different “dog” and have been calling for his replacement or hired help for AA. If there is going to be help for a rookie coach, then who better to do the job than a guy who has been with the team and knows all the players?
Personally, I think a local hired help for AA should be Selas Tetteh, who in the sub-20 world cup last year, beat both Portugal and a USA team that featured eight MLS players.

  12. Ghanaman says:

IDIOT article. The commentator is reacting to a false story!!!

  13. cofie says:

Gsn! tell me why u black listed the ip address of my fon? Is it because I chastised you for doing copy and paste and not even doing it correctly? the person who took that decision to black list me is very stupid! If you dont want our opinions, then don’t creat a column for comments!!

    • Lookman says:

if they blacklisted you, to some extent, they are right. there are some words that are very offensive. how can you say ”stupid”? i think maybe you ain’t matured enough to comment on a website.

    • Papa Nkrumah says:

I was also thinking about checking with GSN. It makes no sense. WHy would you blacklist my ip address? You prefer people insulting on the site than telling you how to improve out of genuine concern. Like Cofie says, please don’t create a column for comments if you have a problem listening to comments of people. Thank you.

  14. Nana says:

I don’t understand why you people are outrageous about AA doing what he thinks will help him, he is the coach and he knows the high s and lows of millo , Aa knows Millo can help him achieve his ambition then so be it , kwasiafo , leave the coach alone

  15. Lookman says:

don’t you people see that Appiah doesn’t know to do when it comes to matter? even Chelsea went backward for Mou. Appiah going to his master for consultation isn’t as bad as you think.

  16. Lord Dennings says:

I know this is out of topic, but why is no one talking about the the Ghana women’s world cup soccer being played today between Ghana and korea?

  17. Yaw2 says:

We the supporter of AA are oppose to this move…so everybody should calm down….That opportunist eastern European better stay in serbia….somebody will clap his monkey ass if he come to Brazil with Ghana….If you need help I’m sure there a so many black people that can help…Odenky,Razak and Abedi can do better job than Milo.

  18. Kwame Adu-Gyamfi says:

Even Milo said no one contacted him about the job. Probably a fake news article.

  19. Mumbi says:

Selfmade, Renard already found a team that has been togather 4 a long time since 2005 when Kalusha Bwalya was Zambias coach. It Was a great squad in 2012 better than any team in africa. Renard Was Just lucky even u Selfmade could have won afcon with Zambia In 2012. Egypt Won it 3 times with Hassan Shehatta but still there were other coaches who were highly paid than him at all those tornaments with better proven records, worse 4 renards in 2012. HR is not a good tactician and was not when he won afcon going by his current perfomance at Sochaux.

  20. Mumbi says:

Again U Stupid bloody fool @ Selfmade, what has your highly rated players of Senegal Won on african continent? What has ivory coast won since 1990 and your BS 4 the past 3 decades? Stupid imbecile, your bs will just be the whipping boys in that group with or without any of your so called tactician.

  21. Kweku says:

Is Milo a bad coach? Yes or No? even if he is contacted for advisory roll is he the head coach? This Gleeson guy has never said anything good about Ghana before concerning soccer but he always end up at the losing side.

  22. taib says:

    Hi Guys,
Why you are so pessimistic!! We had the best score with Milo and I don`t think he is a betrayer. He gave the best for Ghana when he worked here. I think that Appiah and Milo were a good Team and because of that Appiah would like to work again with him. I don`t see nothing bad in it.

  23. Godfred says:

If this is what Kwesi Appiah is going to do,then its like he’s going to be under Milo again…so I agree with Mark bout that fact that its a backward decision.
This coach let us down in the 2012 afcon and left us to feed on grasses after he left for saudi arabia and now jobless.

  24. coffee23 says:

This coach is the best opportunity that Ghana might have in the World Cup. He is the awesome solution for the team. That would be a great step for Ghana team! I have been watching the World Cup 2010 and this guy was brilliant and made a great success not only for him but for whole nation and we have to be grateful to him because of that. I don’t know why are so many negative comments about potential coming of this coach when he made historical results who have never made it before. He is great coach and I wish he has opportunity to help Ghana’s team and be part of it. All the best Coach!!

  25. kuukuphilly says:

iwouldnt’t agree with the journalist more,it clearly shows appiah is not capable of getting the job done.and people should stop blaming appiah alone for this one because his superiors have a hand in it as well.

  26. #me says:

Lets be realistic and face the fact,if its true AA really ask for milo’s assistance, why not????….when the going really gets tough,we all know AA can’t change things so why not allow milo come in…he has being there with milo before and knows how good milo is so if he needs him,its very cool….afta all, brazil is even using two former world champions to coach the national team .as we all saw in the AFCON,AA can’t change a game when things are tough,if the team starts badly, they finish same,no tactical changes…..even chelsea swallowed their pride by hiring mourinho back so we need milo back cos he took under 20 team to angola and almost won it,sent as a penalty away to guin 2 the semis of the world cup….how many of us will reject a big money move lyk he did when he went to asia when the opportunity presents itself????…and someone was talkinq about milo packing the bus…mourinho does that and win trophies, you can’t play again those german machines with this our old midfield and open up and you wouldn’t wanna do that against Ronaldo on his day either

  27. selfmade says:

@ mumbi… I was at the Kumasi sports stadium when zambia played against the pharoahs and zambia with the likes of Chris and Felix outplayed the Egyptians they couldn’t make use of their chances and were eliminated from the touranment! I was thinking like zambia can win the next edition of the afcon in Angola based on their play against Egypt but comes Angola and zambia were shown the exit by Nigeria at the quarter finals though they have the same set of players from CAN 2008! Then in afcon 2012, Renard used this set of players to win the elusive title for u which tell u that the guy had his tactics right in this particular tournament and u have to also remember that he made some great substitutions in the course of the tournament that won certain hard matches for him! Eg is that of mayuka coming from the bench to nailed us during the semi final match! Lastly, your suggestion that zambia already had a great team that has been there for a long time doesn’t hold no water because a team can be together for a long time but cannot win any silverware if it has a poor coach!

  28. Fiifi, Berlin says:

The same people who shouted “He can’t do the job” came back to shout “Hail him!” for qualifying the BS For Brazil 2014! AA is his own man,and knows very well what he is about! He was given the job because the GFA and their “Technical Advosors” has FULL TRUST in him! They also knew of his shortcomings and had moved to work on these by sending him to the various “Shadow-coaching” seminars and the rest of things at Man. City! There are even talks of “supplementing” these with another trip to Lverpool! AA knows exactly what he has to do to “shine” with the BS at Brazil! If he says he needs “materials and advice” to achieve his goal so be it. Critics blast him when he fails and return to hail him when he succeeds.By the way, this talk of blacks and whites; A GREAT AFRICAN SAID THE FOLLOWING: “YOU CAN PLAY SOME SORT OF TUNE ON THE PIANO WITH ONLY WHITE KEYS, YOU CAN DO THE SAME ALSO WITH BLACK KEYS. BUT TO HAVE PERFECT HARMONY YOU NEED BOTH KEYS”. Many other famous people have since then repeated this saying in various forms. This “Blackman” is one of the founders of a famous school in Accra, Ghana. This school has as its emblem , the keys of the piano! Please give AA a break and let him have his peace of mind to do his work! As for Mark Gleeson, the least said about him, the better; this man is a hater of the BS and Ghana. All his predictions and commentary about the BS and Ghana have all FAILED! NOT EVEN A SINGLE ONE!

  29. Alex says:

Miloo is the best,he only did something, without him we wouldnt be in quarterfinals in world cup in SA,and played in finals in African cup,if we talk about coaches who came after him they didn’t do shit!!so u better shut up and accept the best coach!Milo rules!!

  30. kobby_76 says:

So what if Gleeson disagrees with Kwasi Appiah, does that mean he is right? Rubbish if you ask me, if you run a serious entity, does it matter where the materials needed to achieve your objective come from. All the local coaches what have they achieved for Ghana? Make no mistake this GFA has plans to cause a major shock in this world cup, stupid as it may sound, if we truly believe we are as capable as europeans we better keep quiet and support the management team
